While scanning the Ithaca College website for different info, I came across a story on a newly created major..sounded very interesting for the right kind of kid...Its called Outdoor Adventure Leadership..its under the Department of Therapuetic Recreation and Leisure Studies in the School of Health Services and Human Performance.
They suggest career paths of:ecotourism industry, recreation guides, entrepreurship in recreation business, camp management, policymaking in natural resource management.Theres even a national accrediting organization.
Has anyone heard of a similar major at other colleges?

they have it in MD at one of the state school campuses, McDaniel I think. It was mentioned on "Average Kid" thread.

Naropa University, a Boulder, CO, Buddhist based University has grad programs in environmental leadership and environmental therapy.

They have some really amazing majors and grad programs that appeal to academics and those who seek higher spirituality in learning. I'm considering their grad program in dance therapy.

Check out the National Recreation and Park Association website-NRPA.org. Search under accredited programs and a listing of colleges throughout the country that have the major are listed. Someone more computer savvy than myself may be able to link it up. Many schools have this type of major listed as "Recreation and Leisure" or "Sport and Recreation Management." I just "discovered" this website about a week ago. We're looking into that type of major for d #2.

this is the link for the schools that have recreation types of programs - tho sorry I don't know which ones have a sports management piece.

I heard of this major, not exactly with this title, but same idea. I cannot tell you where though.

Cathymee, My S and I are planning on visiting Ithaca College sometime next month, so if you would like some feedback about our impressions feel free to ask. We should have visited before Thanksgiving.

Hi Northeastmom. We were in Ithaca a few weeks ago visiting d # 1 at Cornell. Anyway- if you are into Italian food, you may want to check out ZaZa Cucina for dinner. It was delicious. I did not expect to find such a wonderful Italian restaurant in Ithaca, but I did. Have fun in Ithaca. If the Farmer's Market is still open on the week-ends, it might be a nice place to visit too. Have fun.

Thanks Marny. When we do these college trips we have such little time to explore anything. They are always so hectic. The last couple of times we clicked our gps to restaurants, and let the kids pick out a name they liked- not a good way to pick a place to eat. We lucked out a couple of times, one time we never went in to begin with, and we had one horrible dinner. I appreciate your suggestion and I will click on the gps for directions if we eat in Ithaca. Many thanks!

This is a school we really need to see. I went on livejournal. It seems like a lot of the kids are into opera, theatre, in addition to the journalism. Is this the case? If I did not know which school I was reading about I would have guessed Fordham-LC.

Marny do you know much about it since your D is at Cornell? You can post here or pm if you have any additional information. Thanks again.

Just have to pipe in here about food - if you are on the Ithaca campus during lunch hours be sure to check out the restaurant on top of the East Tower resident hall. It is on the top (14th floor?), not dining hall food, and the view is amazing! The added bonus is that you can check out the life in and around the dorm. Even if you don't eat, just go check out the view. Good luck with your visit.

seenitall, if family is compliant I will. By the time we make the trek they are usually dragging and headed toward the car before I am ready to leave! Thanks for the tip.

Hi again. Ithaca is a popular school with LI kids. It seems to have a solid reputation for communications, theatre and I think for physical therapy-sports (and I think Athletic Training and Sports Management ). I also know kids who are going there majoring in Education. I think it is one of those schools that has a very solid reputations in varied areas. I think Ithaca may have had off for Yom Kippur ( or maybe our friends daughter came home for the holidays) but we saw our friends d in Temple last week. She seems to be very happy at Ithaca and told her parents she made the right choice. Ithaca would probably be a good school for d # 2, but she is not running to go to school upstate NY. We'll be heading to the VA/Md area in November probably giving a 2nd look at George Mason. PS We found a good Italian restaurant down there too.

NORTHEASTMOM - You may have heard of the recreation major thru one of my postings - my DD is an Outdoor Recreation Management Major - her degree will be a BS/MRFS (Management of Recreation Facilities and Services - with concentration in RCLS/ORM) - one of several directions one can go with the MRFS major - lol - lots of letters - I have to say - it certainly fits her to a T!! One thing about the program she is in - is the inclusion of the business/management piece - many programs don't seem to include those - but we feel they are very important in this field.

She is on fall break right now - went white water rafting with the Adventure program at her school - she has a school job with them as well - and is now a trip leader as well - and is then going camping/climbing for a couple of days with friends - such a life she has LOL.

One thing for sure - she may never be rich - but the job opportunities are wonderful and interesting in this field - in any area that she chooses to pursue - and all over the country - heck - all over the world. We just know that she loves it - she was a pre-physical therapy major - and just decided that it was not for her - tho the recreation major has quite a bit of recreation therapy included (a major/field in it-self) and her direction also includes alot of inclusive/adaptive rec too - so it will fill that need as well for her. We have discovered that she is an experiential learner - so this field is perfect for her in that respect.

Actually - this field is not new in of itself - but I think there have been name/title changes over the years - I think maybe because of the many many directions it goes by - and the level of education - masters to PhD - also give credance that this field is growing and coming into it's own.

Notheastmom
Thanks for thinking of me in reference to Ithaca..we've already been there and seen it..D1 scouted it out when looking for her music performance schools.I personally loved the campus..I like modern rather than gothic but some find it lacking that traditional college feel.I do think their dorms need work. The town of Ithaca is great, real college town feel.S1 saw the school while on a summer college program "tour of campuses". He liked it too but felt it too isolated...the upstate locale and not the amenities he wants (wants bigger sports programs!!)But it certainly could be a great fit for another kid.
If theres anyone interested in Communications, look into their Park Scholars program...its a great deal, and their rep is good in that field of study.

Jeepmom, Yes, I remember reading about this in your prior posts. I have also read about similar majors elswhere. It does not seem new, maybe just new to Ithaca College. I guess they are expanding what their school offers.

My son is interested in a less popular major at Ithaca. I know that communications and therapies are strong here. How is the business department? They recently received their AACSB accreditation.
