Thanks so much for posting. So I wonder how the honors program will include these new classes or if they even will? My D received a 5 in Calc AB and is taking BC right now. She was told the Calc 2 was heavy into linear algebra at Tech. Any suggestions?
Well, it’s more just to be aware. Kids who came in with AP Calc AB used to get credit for 4 hours for Calc I. Now they will only get credit for 2 hours for Math 1551. So they end up having to take 4 math classes for a total of 16 hours vs 3 classes for 12 hours. The kids who used to have AP Calc BC used to get only the same 4 credits for Calc I now they get 6 credits. So they would still take 3 classes for 12 hours total.
With the new sequence they have broken out the linear algebra. So now it’s probably more in line with other colleges.
They list 2 honors classes for the replacements for Calc 3 and Diff EQ.
I’m wondering how the kids it will work for the kids part of the way through the math seq. I’m assuming they would need to have both sequences for a while…
My D was accepted to the Honors Program and I have heard that the HP sections of the Calc are just smaller classes and that the Professor frequently teachers the recitations, not a TA. Honors Calc, on the other hand, is more rigorous and only allows limited kids to take it. I wonder which courses will now be offered for the HP core classes?
I think they are only going to let current students take the old classes and they will only be offered for a short time so the new HP classes should be the new sequence.
I’m a current HP student. HP fall 2015 courses were supposed to be announced today but they weren’t, so I imagine they will be posted soon. The impression I’ve gotten, though, is that HP calc is now a thing of the past. That’s not to say there won’t be HP versions of these classes available in a year or two.
As for HP calc vs honors calc, I think you are referring to the same thing. HP calc traditionally had a different course number than regular calc, i.e. 1512 instead of 1502.
