Thanks to the previous two, Spirral and libkey. Good advice for getting in ED. I was planning on visiting over the summer or in the fall, and I’ve been requesting information and inquiring about the school and such.

Your course load works really well, and as you pointed out, starting your essay in the summer with the knowledge from AP Lang will totally help you. I’m confident you can get into most of them, although Vanderbilt is questionable. You should be excited about what you’ve done for yourself, which is great, but that school is /competitive/

Yeah, Vanderbilt is super competitive. I think that ED will slightly improve my chances, as will retaking the ACT and trying to get a 34. Thanks for the response!

Vanderbilt: Low reach
NYU: Match
U of I-Champaign: Low Match
Colgate: Match
Purdue: Low Match
U Chicago: Reach

Could you also give my chances for nyu ed and nyu rd. Thanks

You should get in to all of them for sure except for vandy and uchicago… Imo vandy is a tossup school for you and idk about uchicago
chance me back?http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=1505752

Bump, limit ten characters.

Your stats look good. Just make sure to emphasize debate and write awesome essays, and your chances will be great!

Update: I had to drop Human Geo, due to scheduling conflicts. I don’t think that this will matter much. It is also possible that I will fall to 6th in my class, but again, I don’t think that matters much.

Bump. I will chance back.

Sorry to keep updating, but I think I was wrong with my GPA. Although my school reported that my GPA is an unweighted 3.93, they count A-'s as the same as A’s. Assuming that the colleges I have listed discriminate between the two, I actually have a 3.82 Unweighted GPA, with everything else being the same.

Very nice on all fronts of the application. The one problem may be the lack of EC’s, because, even though you are incredibly dedicated to debate, you would want more than two. Also keep up the community service, if you can do something special in this it can either make for a great “hook” or essay.

Vanderbilt (will do ED): High match/ Low reach
NYU: High Match
U of I-Champaign: I have never heard of this school so I’m not going to try
Colgate: Match
Purdue: Match
U Chicago: High Reach

You should be a shoe-in for UIUC: the only really hard majors to get into are engineering and perhaps business. UChicago will be a real challenge with its 8-9% acceptance rate. I don’t know specifics about the others, but I think you’ll get into at least some of them.

Thanks for the responses. The way I look at it, UIUC is a safety, as is Purdue; Vanderbilt is the challenge that I’ll work to get into, U Chicago is a reach that I may apply to just to see, and NYU is right in the middle. If either of you have chance threads that I haven’t responded to, just give me the link.

Hey-I’d say you have pretty good chances at Vanderbilt ED. Good luck!
Vanderbilt-Low reach (especially ED)
NYU-Match
U of I-I don’t know
Colgate-Match
Perdue-I don’t know
Uchicago–Reach

I don’t know any of the colleges listed except NYU and Chicago. I think you should be able to get into NYU. U-Chicago is definitely a reach school though but not a high reach. I would reccomend you get some more community service hours in and take up a sport for next year(practice over the summer).

Thanks to the previous two. I’ve already started volunteering, so I’m good on that front. But would a sport really make a difference? I mean, it is senior year, and that would probably look like padding, just as much as picking up some random club would.

Vanderbilt (will do ED) - Low Reach (Because ED), reach RD
NYU - Match
U of I-Champaign - Low Match
Colgate - High Match
Purdue - Safety
U Chicago - Reach

Your preference ranking really doesn’t make sense though, considering you said you wanted to study polysci and history. UChicago seems perfect for you. Their debate scene is top notch, with their Model UN team ranked top 3 in the nation, and they are good at a variety of topics. In contrast, Purdue is pure engineering. I don’t really understand why U of C is last in place for you.

Based on your debate ECs and your interest, I would suggest looking at Georgetown, George Washington, UCLA, etc.

Your stat’s aren’t Ivy Level, but I think they’re a notch below that. I think you’re aiming a bit low, except for Vandy (which you’re EDing to) and U of C (which, apparently, you don’t want to go to)

Vanderbilt ED: Low Reach
NYU: Match (they do admissions mostly on stats, and yours are good)
U of I-Champaign: Low Match
Colgate: Match
Purdue: Low Match
U Chicago: Reach

Vanderbilt and UChicago are going to be your two reaches, they both admit more holistically, that’s where your weak EC’s might hurt you. I agree with others, beef up that community service time too, thats big at both of your reaches. Lastly, naviance scores tell you how well you’d fit at a school, NOT your chances to get in.
@Nihilus

The reason U of C is rather low on the list is because I know it is in an incredibly dangerous part of Chicago, which is generally a turn off. More research into it has led me to believe I should try to overcome that aspect, and try for it anyway. I realize it is a great school for PolySci, and if I end up performing as well as I want to on my next ACT (35), I’m probably going to apply there EA, and Vanderbilt ED II. As for the school suggestions, thank you so much. Part of the reason why I’m applying to various safety or match schools is because they are in my area, and I know about them. I looked into Georgetown and UCLA, so I might just add those to my list.

@blankfein

Thanks. I’m going to start writing my essays after I take the June ACT, so they will be kick ***.

@neuromajor

I’ve already started doing community service, and plan to do much more over the summer, and next school year. I realized Naviance’s flaws after people started getting 100%'s at Ivy League’s, at which point I was directed towards Parchment, which seems to be much more accurate. As for E.C.'s, I made the mistake of not doing things early in high school, because I knew where my interests were, and wanted to skip things I may not have liked. I do regret such decision. There is opportunity for some stuff next year, such as various leadership things in the school that primarily are composed of seniors, so I’m sure that would help my chances. I will also make sure to thoroughly chance you.

Why not consider Northwestern? Still near Chicago, challenging but a bit easier to get into (with a 13% acceptance rate) than UChicago’s (8%). As an Illinois resident, your acceptance odds may be a bit better than at Vandy. In any case, from a strategic point of view, you’d be better off having schools at all acceptance rates along the scale – there’s a huge gap between Vandy at 15% and NYU at 30%. Rice? Emory? Notre Dame?
