Post here to talk about housing, decisions, sleeping bag weekends, or anything else pertaining to CMU's Class of 2011

i got in! i'm so happy!! for those of you that didn't get in, don't get depressed..

...I'm so glad I got in as well!! But I have no idea how to pay for it. :(

got in to tepper! yeah!

morewood e tower sucks i hear but good for socializing
mudge has a nice lounge and a courtyard in the back...the rooms r okay
but its far from the campus kind of

i just want a room that has its own bathroom

all those dorms next to the frat houses (across the street from the maggie mo building are good, they have a nice lounge w/ like pool tables and such, and the rooms..the lighting is wierd but it has its own bathroom, kind of smallish

I don't think that Moorewood E tower "sucks", but it's probably just not quite as nice. lol I'm not quite sure where I want to stay yet anyway. Are these your observations from a sleeping bag weekend or is this just what you heard?

I think Nicole is a bit confused- Morewood, New House, and Mudge are across the street from the frat houses. The dorms near maggie mo are next to the sorority houses. New House, Morewood, Mudge, Hammerschlag, and probably almost every other dorm has a lounge with pool tables and similar things. Mudge does have a very pretty courtyard.

The freshman only buildings are Morewood E Tower, New House, Hammerschlag (male only), and Donner (next year is the first year it's freshman only), and I believe they all have shared hall bathrooms. Freshman only areas exist in Mudge and Morewood Gardens (aka A-D tower); these both have semi-private bathrooms (shared between 2 rooms). Floor bathrooms really aren't that bad- they're cleaned daily, and you don't have to deal with it. You also don't have situations where you want to go to sleep but can't because your suitemate is taking a 30 minute shower and you need to brush your teeth.

Well I've been to cmu two years in a row for a week because I was at a Jeanne Baxtresser masterclass. She's a flute professor at cmu who played for the New York Philharmonic for 15 years. I stayed in Henderson one year, and i forget the name of it but the first year i stayed at the dorm near the UC, I remember that it was just across from the tennis courts. The observation of Morewood E tower was from the SBW. I mean it wasn't a bad room, it wasn't really small or anything, but I was truly disgusted by the showers! Yucky. And I visited my friend's dorm in Mudge, and the lounge was really nice. His room was in the basement which is kind of dark, and cruddy.

From what I hear, Donner is supposed to be the worst. Some people call it the dungeon? lol

Morewood E tower? that's right across the street from that wierd metal rod with people climbing up to the sky. It's funny because at night I would always mistake those people for real people, and get really freaked out. The only frat houses I knew about on campus were the Greek houses by the dorms that are across the street separating the campus from those three dorms, I know that Henderson is one of those dorms.

i got in tepper, but i've nvr been to CMU, and i hav no idea about how US universities work.
Nicole32899 : I feel so lucky when i read ur posts bcuz it sounds like u know quite a lot about CMU. So would you mind telling me more about the housing, dinning and such? i lived with my parents for almost everyday of my life. the idea that im moving to a new place without knowing anyone and living in dorms really scares me a LOT ...

everyone says that the dining is really bad but it's not that bad

some cafs are better than others, i know that there's supposed to be a good indian food place on campus, but theres a caf right by tepper that actually has good food, and the zebra cafe in the fine arts building is pretty good for like bagels and stuff. I know there's a starbucks right down the street from the school, and i love the buffalo chicken sandwiches at the union grill, theres a subway and an asian food place.

a lot of kids on campus i hear eat out bc they think that the caf food is so bad. lol. i mean i've eaten it and had no real problem with it...but then again, i ate out a lot more than i ate in the cafeteria.

you're in tepper too! pm me feeling

I just got in CMU too! yay!

curious, are there dorms that are rather quiet and with the semi-private bathrooms?

yeah, there are some dorms like that that i've heard of... not sure which ones though. i'm thinking maybe mudge (?) i'm pretty sure moorewood isn't like that.

do they match up the roomates randomly? or can we choose based on interests, religion, ethics n such?

i think there's a roommate survey that we fill out when we get all our stuff later--i think for the most part roommates work out well...

i don't know if this is true or not but i think roommates from different schools are paired together. although when i went on by sbw, two tepper kids were in the same room. maybe pairing people from different schools adds to the interdisciplinary nature of cmu hahahaha.

personally i want a roommate who's just quiet and nice. i think if my roommate and i clicked too well, i would never be able to get my work done haha.

Golden Dragon..what school did u get accepted to

E tower rocks...haha. Frat houses along Morewood Ave. are DEFINITELY cooler than those on the other side (Hills)...

Roommates are pretty much matched by schools or similar majors, and then other background info comes into play. our floor is like

CS - Physics (i requested my roommate, both from the same hs)
CS -CS
CS - ECE
Bio - Chemistry
Business - Business
ECE - Civil E (both international)
Econ - Psych
Archi - Archi
ECE - Econ
CS -CS
Business - Econ
ECE - Mech E
Archi -Archi
Business - Business - Business

The only questions on the roommate pairing thing are:
smoker / nonsmoker
can live with smoker / can't live with smoker
clean / dirty
early bird / night owl

They don't always do the best job with matching people, though I really liked my fresman year roommate.

thx for all the info!!!
besides the tuition fee, books, insurance, room, and meal plan fees, how much do u think i need? like i mean i dont want to eat on campus every single day and i want to go out to the city too! but i dont flush money down the toilet. so how much 'allowance' do u think is reasonable for an average student? like including food, clothings, cellphone, laundry n such. the tuition and living cost quite a lot of money n it sucks how they dont give financial aid to int. students. so im trying to calculate the aprox. amount it wud ACTUALLY cost my family a year. THX very much for helping me out!

Laundry is included in dorm costs unless you live in one of the off campus apartments, so you just need to factor in the cost of detergent and dryer sheets or whatever, which should be under $10 a semester (My box of dryer sheets is 3 semesters old and still half full).

My parents pay for my cell phone bill, but if you want to figure out how much one would cost, go to Verizon's or Sprint's website and look at their plans. Costs vary a lot depending on how much you talk. Pay-as-you-go is also an option, if you don't talk much, usually about $40 for a phone and .25 cents/minute.

Clothing costs- are you a guy or a girl? Do you like to go shopping? Do you bargain shop, or do you wear expensive, designer clothes? Do you need to get a winter coat? You can probably expect to pay $25-40 for a Carnegie Mellon hoodie (since everyone has one), but beyond that, it varies quite a bit. You can get a nice winter coat for $100 or so if you don't have one. If you like designer clothes, you can spend a fortune in Shadyside, otherwise there are normal malls.

Again, food costs depend on your tastes. I usually eat out twice a week, but at cheap places like Panera or a hole-in-the-wall Chinese place, so I spend $10-15 a week. If you go to normal restaurants, it'll cost you $10-15 each time you go out. Your meal plan will probably provide you all the food you could possible want to eat, but most people get sick of it after awhile.

can you guys put up your stats so I can see my chances for statistics???
