New Members of CMU Class of 2011

I got into information systems in HSS :)

anyone know how hard it would be for me to switch to CS?

To transfer to CS, take CS classes, and after you take 15-211 (typically the 3rd semester of programming if you have no previous experience), you can apply for transfer. If you do well in 15-211, you probably won't have much difficulty switching, but some majors don't do so well in the class. This might be a bit different now, though, because they just restructured the prerequisites of CS classes.

and tushar, i dont know how well my stats represent the rest of the student body.
i got rejected from CS(i think) but into information systems in HSS with:

uw gpa: 3.3 or so but generally lower gpa junior and sophomore years
3 Cs in Algebra 2/Trig and Precalculus...
6 AP/honors, 6 community college classes(5 As, 1 B)
Comp Sci AP - 3
Eng Lang Comp AP - 5

SAT 1: 750(math), 780(CR), 710(writing)
SAT 2: 780(mathIIC), 740(Lit), 710(physics)

other:
- a lot of extracurriculars in leadership, teaching, and a lot of political involvement
- ~350 hours volunteering
- pretty good essays on political apathy and how i found my passion for the computer sciences
- no interview
- ok/good teacher and counselor recs

hope that helps =)

OH thx so much KrazyKow!! there's chinese food places?!! SWEET ^^

ive got a friend whos top choice is CMU but hes majoring in biological sciences.
im an IS major.

would be able to dorm together even though we're majoring in unrelated things?

tushar707 my stats:

SATI 640/650/770 cr/w/m (pretty bad compared to other CCers >< )
SATII 770/780 mathIIC/phy
- IB Diploma - predicted somewhere 36-38
- no interview
- very diversed extracurricular activities, but none of them are extremely impressive. i guess in a way it shows im willing to try new things
- teacher recs should be good

I requested my roommate who went to the same high school. I am a CS major and he's doing Physics...so sisypheanblithe you'll be fine =D

accepted to tepper

here are my stats
very competitive prestigious private school
3.6 gpa UW
SAT I: M800 V750 W750
SAT II: Physics:720 IIC:750 IC:720

A good number of awards (for specific ones PM me)

I think my app was very consistent. I had two bodies of interest: business and music. All my activities were related to those two things, which I think shows a level of commitment. Also about fit..CMU really meets my academic and artistic needs, because the instrument I play is a very very strong program at cmu and so is the business program.

Hooks: Finalist in a business plan competition, talents: musical instrument, skipped a grade of math so i took calc as a junior, independent study on quantum mechanics

Essays: well the business supplement was great
common app essay on the other hand.... let's just say I cringe every time i read / think about it hahaha

Recs: college counselor and two teacher recs: probably very strong

There is Chinese food, but it's fairly Americanized, and I generally won't touch the stuff on campus. The fact that Asiana's (nice name, huh?) Indian-ish curry tastes better than most of the things they sell bothers me a bit when it comes to their food-from-other-asian-countries. And most of the stuff from Bento Bowl tastes like it's just been put in a wok and cooked, without any sauce.

sisypheanblithe,
you were just accepted now right? ED1?
I thought you ED they only look at your top choice and only if they defer you from that top choice will they look at the others...

hmm im not sure. on the app i got to rank my schools.

actually, yeah, you're right IS was my top choice and I got in so i guess my app wasnt considered for any other programs :)

I'm so going to go into New House.

Anyone else have an opinion on dorms?

im thinking
1. new house
2. morewood e
3. donner

search for "housing" on the forums and you'll get a lot of info from past years :)

anyone have an opinion on mudge

mudge is pretty nice, semi priv b-rooms, a nice courtyard in the back and a study louinge, the only thing is its kind of far, its like further down the street from morewood
the bottom floor which is the all frosh floor is kind of dark and dungeony, the single person room is decent, the two person room is very small and squished though and from what i saw, very dark the beds are ltierally like 5 feet away from each other

i actually want either henderson, or welch theyre pretty close to tepper, and they have semi priv bathrooms
its like two rooms r connected by a bathroom, and both rooms have access to that one bathroom
i dont think i could deal with 1 bathroom per floor yuck

only thing is that the closets r open, they do have drawers, and at least in the room that i stayed in, there was only one desk, the room was pretty small, but the bathrooms were good
they also have a nice lounge thing on the bottom floor witha pool table, tv, vending machines, kitchen, laundry room, etc

i stayed in resnik or west wing over the summer and theyre really nice, i had a view of the gesling stadium. theyre suite style dorms, with 1 bathrooms for three people or whatever, even though the bathroom lighting is really yellow and unflattering, they have a common area, only thing is only 5-6% of resnik and westwing residents r frosh, and not that many people live in those dorms so that's probably about 20 frosh total in those two buildings i think .... so im sure socially its depressing

but..it is close to all the academic buildings..i dont know. im thinking about requesting that dorm even though i might not get it

Oh no! i just heard we have to place a deposite or smth within 2 weeks of acceptance or smth? does anyone know how much and how do i pay? and by when? because im on vocation now so i have no idea what i should do if i missed the dead line! argh....

which dorms are the best social scence for the freshmen? is there a dorm that football players or athletes tend to get?

Sorry to barge in on the 2011 forum as I'm a freshman, that said, I am class of 2011 ... gotta love 5 year programs.

The tendency for housing is that you are housed with a similar person. One of my roommates is an Architect like myself, the other, formerly a temp housing student, is Design (we kept him in our double, crazy huh). Football players with football players, etc etc.

In terms of actual housing, it is honestly easier to get housing near what you immediately need. Donner, Margaret Morrison Appts, and Hammershlag (sp) are near to the freshman design, arch, music, and art studios, as well as the gym for the football players. WW and Resnik are too, but even sophmores have trouble getting into those.

The top three that everyone chooses are Morewood, New House, and Mudge/Donnner. They are all your typical dorm, with mudge being a little atypical, but its still just a dorm.

Honestly in my mind, New House is way too small and too far from the actual campus to warrant living there at all, Morewood is alright, as it has food, and slightly larger rooms, but I wouldn't trade it for Donner, even though it wasn't my top three. (Donner is way close to all my classes, which is priceless. It also does not smell around back as it did, supposedly, in previous years)

In terms of social scene, again it depends. Morewood, New House and Mudge are across from the frat quad, if you like frat parties. (And while we're on it there are two types of parties, Frat Parties, and parties run by a major, eg. Design Parties, Drama Parties, Archie Parties, and honestly the latter are far more worthwhile) These, as well as the better frat parties happen on off-campus houses anyway, usually up Beeler St.

Really, it is the temporary housing kids who get the best deals, as any apartment is better than a dorm, far yes, but this time its worth it. That and the fact that they can have a commuter meal plan, it really is living like an upperclassman.

That said I plan to live in an off campus house next year.
