New numbers are out for IUB

SAT averages went up again, etc

Biggest, brightest IU Bloomington freshman class has increasingly Hoosier make-up: IU News Room: Indiana University

"Most Indiana residents" is a bit of a media spin, the OOS percentage is up to 39% and that's where the test score increase is coming from.

lol, makes sense

Actually, A2Wolves6,the article indicated that the percentage of Indiana residents was an increase over the past 2 years. Read the 10th paragraph.

The automatic scholarships for 2010 were changed, and will be harder to get.

[Automatic Academic Scholarships: Office of Scholarships: Indiana University Bloomington](http://www.scholarships.indiana.edu/pages/automatic.php)

^Thanks for the Automatic Scholarship update link. I noticed that the threshold for the IU Distinction Scholarship is now an SAT score of 1330 out of 1600, and a 3.8 unweighted gpa. Are these same figures now also the threshold for a student applying for freshman admission to receive an invitation to Hutton Honors College?

^^ small correction (from the website) re: GPA used for scholarship -

“When students apply for admission to IU, whichever cumulative GPA on the student’s transcript is higher (weighted or unweighted) will be utilized for admission and scholarship consideration.”

3.8 weighted = :)

momonthehill-Based upon conversations we had with admissions people and Hutton Honors people this year, the threshold for Hutton Honors College has been higher, even this year. They tended to look for 1350 or higher.

I’ve been watching the trends with these scholarships for a couple of years. Last year the SAT for the $9000 scholarship went up only 10 points and the gpa remained the same. 20 points this year! Wow. Trying to predict what it might be when child #2 applies in a couple of years.

I think the Scores for the $5000 scholarship went up only 10 points?? Not sure about the $2000/year scholarship. Anyone have a better memory than me?

Thanks, rrah. That’s interesting that the HHC was using 1350 as its threshold. In early April, daughter #2 and I visited IU and, while there, attended a presentation by the honors college. During the presentation we were told that the current year’s SAT threshold was 1310 but that it would be raised slightly (as HHC rep. put it) for the class applying for admission for Fall 2010. I have to say that I’m not surprised if the threshold is >1350 given the increased number of applicants for IU.

AL34–Thanks, I stand corrected. What probably threw me was the wording, “Minimum GPA of 3.80 on a 4.0 scale”. But according to the FAQ’s on the site, you are correct.:)

My D will be attending IU in fall 2009. She had exactly a 1310 SAT and 3.8 GPA, she did not qualify for HHC. She was told she did met the SAT threshold., so apparently the cut off was a 1350 rather than a 1310. However, she did get 9000 scholarship. She will try to get into Hutton after freshman year.

That release and all the data are from 2008. Most schools don’t post such stuff until after students actual register and show up on campus. I do see now why IU’s numbers are getting better–when did they start buying better students?

barrons–did you notice the date on the original post? Someone revived it for some reason. I recall decades ago IU offered some merit scholarships, but really upped their game a few years ago. It’s apparently working not only with OOS students, but instate also. The number of seniors receiving the $9000 scholarship from IU(and attending) in my D’s graduating class was amazing.

Nope, did not see that.

The number of direct admits to Kelley has probably gone up a lot the last few years too, which indicates higher achieving students at IU. The facebook section for Class of 2012 Kelley direct admits has 416 names. Don’t know how many direct admits are not listed on facebook.

Here is a story on increasing admissions standards at IU and Roger Thompson’s reaction two years ago to a charge that in-state students are unfairly not getting into IU.

ISB312, don’t wait until after freshman year to apply to Hutton, as it may be too late to get in then. Apply as soon as you can after the Fall 2009 semester. I have read on this site that it is automatic to get in if you have the 3.7+ gpa. My son’s friend had a 3.8 in Fall 2008 and applied to Hutton late in the Spring 2009 semester and did not get in. Someone at Hutton said he waited too long to apply and needed to have applied earlier in the semester.

AFTER STARTING AT IU

Students who do not enter the Hutton Honors College as incoming freshmen may still be eligible for admission if their academic work during their first semester at IU is outstanding. After completion of that semester, you may ask that your record be reviewed if you are interested in participating in Hutton Honors College courses and programs. To be considered for admission at that time, you must have completed, during your first full semester at IU, a minimum of 14 graded academic credits (grades of S for Satisfactory will not be counted), and you must have maintained a 3.7 GPA.

If you have a 3.7+ after the first semester, they will send you an email about a month to a month and a half into the second semester inviting you to be in Hutton.

They are really picky that you get the 3.70 GPA, not a 3.68 or 3.69–and I speak from experience.

Back in Spring 2007, the requirement to get in was “only” a 3.60. My son had a 3.59 GPA at the end of that semester (end of the year)–which included, unfortunately, a C+ in BUS A100–the dreaded Kelley School weed-out course, and he was rejected when he applied to Hutton.

He asked if they would reconsider if he got two "A"s at the University of Virginia during the summer in the Financial Accounting and Microeconomics courses he was taking and was told “no”. (My son was already enrolled at UVA for summer school, and once you enroll for summer classes, UVA has a “no drop” policy–meaning he would have been out the $5,000 cost and gotten "F"s in both classes if he didn’t attend–this is why he didn’t take summer school at Indiana instead.) (P.S. He only got one A at UVA, but he did pass both classes.) Hutton raised the GPA requirement for admission to 3.70 the following year.

To add onto what Calcruzer said about them being picky; one of my neighbors had a 3.85 GPA, but was one credit short of the minimum credits needed to apply to hutton and she was not able to get in, so make sure you are taking the required credits (which is 14).
