New nyu housing assignment policy for new incoming freshmen

All right,

I was trying to clear the confusion about Housing Application policy and what I got from the Housing Services at NYU this A.M. (2 separate individuals in Housing Services) is that the Housing Assignment Policy has changed as of this year.

Sorry, ED people no longer have priority in housing assignments. Everyone, meaning ED and RD freshmen are assigned randomly at the same time to a "lottery" system to determine which dorm the person gets assigned to. So, as long as you submit the Housing Deposit by the deadline, you have equal chances as EVERYONE else for your first choice dorm.

No more worrying about getting in your application and survey in asap; just do by the deadline they give you. This was confirmed by two staff members in Housing Services.

^ Awesome. That’s really helpful, thanks

But, what happens with roomates? I heard there was a personality questionnaire to determine who’d be a good match to share a dorm with… is that still there. I don’t really want to end up with someone broing, or someone who doesn’t go out!

Same thing applies. Just get your survey completed and submit it by the due date. If you have a roommate that you have hooked up with through NYU’s Housing Survey match-up, make sure the roommate also submits the completed application by the deadline. Then everyone gets equal chances.

Cool… I’m from London, so I don’t know anyone going to NYU.

Would you happen to know what kind of questions they have on the survery/questionnaire (whatever you want to call it)?

spaz, I guess you have yet to receive info about housing application procedures and housing deposit? This is what the NYU website indicates about Housing Application:

Applications
Freshmen/Transfer

New incoming freshman and transfer applications are available during specific application periods beginning in the spring. Detailed instructions and information for eligible students will be sent by the Office of Admissions and the Office of Residential Life and Housing Services.

I have not seen the NYU Housing Survey for Roommate Match-Up. However, just to give you an idea of what you might want to consider, I will refer to a questionnaire created by students in the Class of 2014 FB website. This was a very comprehensive roommate match-up questionnaire. NYU probably has some of the questions listed in this survey.

Keep in mind THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL NYU ROOMMATE SURVEY, which I have not seen. Other accepted students might have gotten the Housing Survey already. If so, they can share with you.

^ These are good questions to think about.

Can you please post the link where the new housing policy info is? I was really hoping for the priority so I could get the cheaper dorms :(

SIXELA,

The ED priority housing assignment policy of previous years might have been written somewhere, but it might have been just “unwritten” policy for NYU. I do not know about previous documentation. Definitely, there is nothing written about the new Housing Assignment Policy that I can find right now. It seems like they just came up with it recently since some of their own staff in Housing appear not to know of the change.

As I stated above:

“I was trying to clear the confusion about Housing Application policy and what I got from the Housing Services at NYU this A.M. (2 separate individuals in Housing Services) is that the Housing Assignment Policy has changed as of this year.” And according to them, it does not matter when a housing application is submitted. It is just a matter of submitting it by the deadline to be thrown into the hopper for random assignment."

Also, I related above:

“Everyone, meaning ED and RD freshmen are assigned randomly at the same time to a “lottery” system to determine which dorm the person gets assigned to.”

My question to you (I think you are ED), did you get a housing application yet? What is your deadline for submitting it? It should now be the same date as for RD students if what I was told is true. I have no reason to believe I was told the wrong thing by two staff members at Housing.

One Residential Life and Housing Service staff member was not even aware of the change. She had to call the central Res Life and Housing Services to double check. She called me back to confirm that what the first person stated is in fact new policy. There is no longer distinction or priority given to ED students in regards to Housing Assignments.

It is logical that they would do this. This way, the ED students, who have no choice in where they matriculate in the fall, will still go to NYU even if they feel “cheated” by this new policy. On other hand, the RD students, who still have a choice, now have another reason to choose NYU (better dorm selection). Although not fair to ED students, NYU is just being smart, probably slightly increasing their RD yield.

SIXELA,

You should put down as your choices:

1) Rubin
2) Hayden
3) Brittany
etc. by order of cost if that is the most important factor to you.

It would be good if you can find your own roommates (for a triple) and if all three of you can have the same exact order of choices, that might help to bump you up for one of the low cost housing choices.

Also, you may want to choose to apply separately to Goddard if the academic year rate in the low $9000s is something you can consider (this will increase your chance of getting one of the lower cost housing options). If the residential college is something you are interested in.

Finally, I would not give up if I were you in case you get a higher cost option. You can try to talk to Housing Services as soon as the housing assignment is made to present your case. Finally, there is a “frozen” period the first 3 weeks of school, after which you can still request for a room change once the final housing inventory is taken by staff. So, a few options for you to hopefully get your low cost housing. (Though getting Rubin as the only low cost housing option will be a little more difficult unless you go the route of getting together all the roommates for your LCT and having everyone in the group select Rubin as first choice.) GL.

One of the best ways to get your first choice dorm is to choose an explorations theme in the dorm you want. So if Rubin is your first choice, pick an explorations for that dorm.

milkandsugar,

Great point! I forgot about how an Explorations Choice will help out since they try to match you with the Explorations theme.
