New Orleans Colleges Face Huge Obstacles

According to this article, Tulane has about 88% of their students re-enrolled for this semester, Xavier has about 75%, and U N.O. hopes to have about 75% as well. Dillard, however, only has about 50% of its former students. According to the article, with about 80% of revenue coming from tuition, the schools will have a lot of challenges.

Interesting side note: Tulane's President Cowen commented yesterday that Xavier and Dillard are both doing "better than they had expected" to be doing at this point. The NOLA schools have all formed various sorts of "mutual aid" arrangements, whether formal or not. My impression was that some of the help Tulane had expected to provide is not needed; some is being used. This is not to dispute the above statement that the challenges are there.

Sidney Frank, the man who gave so much money to Brown University, and who passed away last week, also gave $5 million to hurricane relief efforts, of which $1.1 million will be shared by Xavier, Tougaloo, and by Dillard. Dillard is the alma mater of Brown Pres, Ruth Simmons.
