I just noticed this change on the website when I tried to copy a link to a friend of mine. The Presidential scholarship no longer covers full tuition… :(

Presidential Scholarship
Requires a 33-36 ACT (1440-1600 SAT) and minimum 3.75 high school GPA for consideration. Awarded at 2/3 non-resident tuition, currently valued at $59,632 over four years ($14,908 per year), a $1,500 technology allowance in the first fall semester, and the Auburn Academic Guarantee. The Auburn Academic Guarantee includes admission to the University Honors College and a $4,000 enrichment experience stipend available for one semester after the second year

Heritage Scholarship
Requires a 30-32 ACT (1330-1430 SAT) and minimum 3.5 high school GPA for consideration. Awarded at 2/3 non-resident tuition, currently valued at $59,632 over four years ($14,908 per year).

Charter Scholarship
Requires a 28-29 ACT (1250-1320 SAT) and minimum 3.5 high school GPA for consideration. Awarded at $20,000 over four years ($5,000 oer year).

Note: Minimum test scores required for consideration at each level do not
include the writing score.

ooh, i just checked it. hopefully, this won’t change anything for those who were already awarded the presidential scholarship for the entirety of the 4 years. anyone hear? i just sent an email to fin. aid. ofc.

Runners?? When I started looking into Auburn in the spring, and as late as the third week in May the information that I saw was that an oss student with a 3.75GPA and 1440SAT/33ACT was awarded full tuition for all four years (as opposed to the 2/3 shown now). The webpage shows a note at the bottom ‘updated 6/1/2010’.

^^Feedback, I would think if you have already been accepted and awarded the scholarship that it stays the same. It appears this is for 2010 fall applicants for entrance in fall 2011.
Good to check directly w/ the school. This was just to open a conversation and see what others had heard.

If you are part of the incoming freshman class of 2010 you should have received a written explanation of your scholarship benefits and requirements. This change is only for the next class, class of 2011.

^ Lucky us It was not a make or break, and S2 had not made the cut for Presidential (but was very close with SATs and ACTs are expected to hit the mark). Oh well. It is something he will have to consider. That extra tuition benefit would have been nice. We will probably find a lot of this over the next few months as universities that have oos merit plans reevaluate budget constraints, and oos recruiting.

With high qualification for the Heritage Scholarship (scores already sent to show interest), what is the likelihood of receiving an invitation to War Eagle Days in the Fall, and would it be best to wait until then to visit? We were planning a visit in the summer, but can only make one trip due to distance. Any thoughts?

I honestly don’t know about War Eagle Invitations. Both my daughter and her boyfriend received invitations without any prior contact with Auburn. My daughter went and fell in love, her boyfriend didn’t as his parents seem opposed to going to college in Alabama. I don’t know why and I don’t ask.

thanks blueiguana. that’s what i figured from what we had received. i totally understand with the economy. so, proud_mom, your daughter IS going to AU, correct? is your daughter’s bf’s parents not from the south? don’t blame you for not asking! haha

Did the gpa go up for heritage as well? I can’t remember. The good thing I read today although I don’t think it is new is that Auburn recalculates weighted gpa if you are not on 4.0 system. I’m thinking that will help my S as his prep school doesn’t weight. When does the Auburn ap go up?

Blueiguana - I’m sorry I didn’t word my comment very clearly. You’re right that the information you provided re: the scholarships is changed. When I said “not a new change” - I was referring to my subsequent comment that the SAT scores required for scholarships can’t be superscored. Just thought it might be helpful for others to realize that, as I don’t think it’s stated clearly on the website (though it’s not new info). Hope this clarifies!

^No worries. I wanted to make sure I hadn’t missed something. As far as I remember Runners, the criteria did not change, only the award for Presidential from full oos tuition to 2/3.

I wasn’t trying to ruffle feathers. If you have been offered a scholarship, I would think it stands, however contact the school.

This post was specifically for families like mine, who have NOT yet applied, however had seen previous criteria and awards. It’s a good reminder that these may be changing at other schools as well.

I have a rising Sr. so this change will effect him, and certainly come into play in his decision. With no difference in tuition from our state school (which is quite good in his major) he may find far less pull to be that much further from home. (10-14hrs further). Ultimately the decision will be his,but in our conversations this was certainly a factor.

We are in the same position as blueiguana, rising senior S, has Presidential stats, but probably will miss NMF by one point. The change from full OOS tuition to 2/3 is going to be a large enough impact to drop Auburn from a front-runner to middle if not lower in the pack. Also looking at UA-Huntsville and noticed that their freshman scholarship page has been placed ‘under construction’, so I expect they are changing their scholarship levels also. We are visiting the school in late June, so I will be sure to let the admissions people know what an adverse affect this will have on our decision.

^I want to clarify, so as not to misrepresent, my son currently qualifies for the Heritage Scholarship. His first SAT in May was just great, but not quite high enough for Presidential. He takes the ACT on 6/12 which is much better suited to his strengths. His GC anticipates a higher score. It is what we think is an attainable goal, but one not yet earned.

This may not seem like a big deal. I just don’t want to appear to misstate my son’s qualification.

RadDad, I would urge your son to look at the other scholarship options Auburn offers. The Departmental scholarships and local Auburn Alumni Club scholarships often cover the difference. I know the Auburn club in my area offers 1 partial scholarship and 1 full. It’s worth looking into before you count it out :)

anyone know if there have been any changes to the IN state scholarships? We are going on TH for War Eagle Day- any sugggestions /tips- for a Bama fan going to look at Auburn…

feedback: Yes, my daughter will be at Auburn in August. Fortunately, she is a NMF and has acquired quite a few outside scholarships as well, so Auburn is pretty much free for us unless she joins a sorority and needs too many clothes. Her bf’s dad is a native Floridian and has family in Opelika and the mom is originally from the mid-west, but moved to FL as a teenager. I don’t know what the problem is as both of their children will be at a GA school, but the mom did attend school up north and I think she just wanted her kids to go up north to school. I honestly am not quite sure if it is because the college is in Alabama, or because they think it is a party school or a mixture of both. We get along, but it is a weird relationship. I don’t think the parents are always quite honest with certain things, although they seem to really want my daughter as their daughter-in-law one day.

Alwaysandforever: Thanks for the comments. I had not thought that the Departmental and other scholarships would be available to my son. I had assumed that if you were NMF, or Presidential, or Heritage, etc. that those scholarships being more valuable would have precluded additional scholarships. My thinking was that those scholarships would draw other students who may not have overall stats high enough to qualify for the larger scholarships, but if they excelled in math, or science, or robotics, etc that the school would have something to attract their attendance. As I said, we are visiting the school the end of June, so I will have quite a few questions to have answered.

Blueiguana: sorry if I wasn’t as clear as I should have been. By saying we are in the same position, I meant that my S is a rising senior, has not yet applied, and that the change in the value of the scholarship will cause us to reconsider traveling about 14 hours to Auburn from IL if the savings in tuition expense will not be there. Good luck to your son on the ACT next week.
