New paltz vs. Oneonta

Hello, It's been awhile!..but i just wanted to say I've gotten into SUNY Oneonta for the Music industry program and will probably minor in performance if I end up there!..Does anyone know anything about the school or program i am interested in?..i shall visit the school no matter what!

The other school I'm looking at, which seems more my type is SUNY new paltz for contemporary music studies!...I really liked the feel of the atmosphere and school but unfortunetly during our tour we did not get to view the music department..once again just asking if anybody knows anything about the school in general or the music programs?..i have my audition on march 28th!..so im crossing my fingers that i do well and get in!

How do oneonta and new paltz stack up against each other?!..

please help/ personal message me or do whatever you must!..its getting down to that time where i must choose a college

New Paltz is nice. In my opinion it gives you the best of both worlds. Its located in a small, cozy, old town but bigger cities are close by (Kingston, Poughkipsie and the big one, NEW YORK CITY). It is more selective than Oneonta, but that should not persuade you to attend. I believe that academically speaking, both schools are equal (good). New Paltz is an up and coming SUNY, which I expect to be just as selective as Geneseo in the next 5 years. They have some really great projects planned (new buildings, etc). The campus is very nice, typical of a SUNY. I reccomend you visit both. I can’t help with the music program because I know nothing about it. If your avatar is correct and you are from Rochester, be aware that upstaters are only a measely 18% of New Paltz’s student body. More upstaters go can be found at Oneonta. New Paltz also is very diverse aka lots of different types of kids around. Depends what you are looking for, I don’t know much about Oneonta, but New Paltz is a really great school.

I, personally, would pick New Paltz over Oneonta. The location is better and it’s got a very cool, artsy vibe that I think would lend itself to a music major. Lots of music of all kinds is found on campus and in the surrounding communities and cities. I would consider that there is a more diverse student body at NP with the chance for greater individual expression of oneself. If that kind of environment appeals to you, then NP should be your choice.

I am in the Music Industry program at Oneonta, and I love it. It is geared, obviously, towards the business end of the industry. Don’t get me wrong, we learned theory and had to take lessons and learn classical music history blah blah blah… But there are many positive attributes to our program. First off, you MUST intern to get the degree. That is excellent, and unparralleled to any other program I know. The Music Industry Club (MIC) can earn you first hand expirence booking national acts, writing for music publications, and pretty much any other aspect of the industry. You can earn credits in any one of our bands:Jam,Blues,Jazz,Rock,Frank Zappa Cover, etc. Our professors are excellent, all succeeding in some form of the industry.
One of my best friends goes to NP for graphic design. It is a kickin’ town thats tons of fun. There is a huge arts scene thats very cool. But if you want to be a Music professional, i believe Oneonta will offer you the best oppurtunities to succeed AFTER college(which is really why we are all here). Hope this helps, and feel free to reply with more questions.

thanks for your help nickhurlbut…im still at a huge crisis on where i should go…hopefully i do get into new paltz(my audition is this weekend) but your take on oneonta does help alot…my music theory teacher USED to work there for the music industry program…and doesnt seem very down for it…but maybe it has changed since then…

besides the ensembles…is there any other performance opportunities…such as performance minors etc.?

thanks alot…once again anyone with a take on either new paltz or oneonta’s music programs…let me know! thanks
