Any opinions about New Pembroke #4?

Heard a lot of mixed reviews, mostly negative. Any redeeming qualities?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Pros: recently renovated rooms, nice bathrooms, clean (not grungy), nice lounges. I like the lofted beds, too.

Cons: slightly smaller rooms than other dorms, confusing interior (some people say there’s less hall bonding).

I loved living in Pembroke my freshman year. Some people don’t like the location, but it’s a great place to meet other freshmen and the V-dub is nice (I miss it now).

More pros and cons:
Pros: Unlike some dorms, still I believe has some lounges not converted to rooms. Very convenient to Thayer (right above) which can be a pro or con (good coffee shop just below, noise factor). Definitely look up your room config. there are actually a few that are bigger. Unlike the other freshman dorms I think they still had singles in NP in the lottery, so more ppl around you to ask re courses etc. If you like to exercise, or are on a team, it’s as close as you can get to OMAC. While small, I’ve heard that some of the rooms have more storage space than average.
Cons: noise of Thayer (mainly a prob if you face that way), Hard for people to find your room! Some of the rooms have weird dimensions so don’t buy a rug unless it’s tiny until you figure that out.

Thanks for your input. Is the noise off of Thayer really that bad?

It wasn’t for me the few times I stayed in my friend’s room, which was directly overlooking Thayer. It may be a little noisy on Friday and Saturday nights when the bars close at 2, but that’s about it.

It’s far enough up that you don’t get much noise. Sometimes early am traffic, deliveries can be a bit, but I would say it’s quieter overall than Keeney etc.

^ Drunken biddies and motorcycle crews on Thayer street at 11PM+ (and yes, sometimes on weekdays) is not quieter than Keeney, which is surrounded by Charlesfield, Brown Street, and Benevolent. It also depends what side of NP4 you live on, but being disrupted by crying/fighting drunk people is not out of the ordinary.

^ LMAOOOOOO LAPRAS (I was so tempted to say your real name and then I realized this wasn’t facebook). That is the most truthful, accurate depiction of NP4 EVER!!

I lived in NP back in 1978-79, shortly after it opened. It won some kind of architectural award, but you couldn’t prove it by me. World’s smallest singles, no closets (“you mean we need closets for college students?”), so the freestanding closet-like things take up more of the very limited space in your room. It was designed for airconditioning except that the compressors were never installed so you get one tiny window that actually opens. It may well be that some of these issues have been addressed in the renovations or at some point during the last 35 years, but a lot of the problems with NP back then seemed inherent in the design. Nice bathrooms, though.
