New Rankings Released

The National Collegiate Scouting Association’s annual college power rankings were just released.

Colleges and universities are given a ranking based on academics, athletics, and student-athlete graduation rates.

The top 5 schools (all Divisions) for academics and athletics are:

Williams College (MA)

Amherst College (MA)

Middlebury College (VT)

Duke University (NC)

Stanford University (CA)

i had never seen that ranking before. i approve.

YAY, Williams! <--where the smart athletes go! :)

Those rankings are nonsense

^^Why are they nonsense?

One of the factors in the ranking includes the US NEWS rankings, that's why these rankings are bullshet!

ohhh...I didn't even notice.

Are the USNWR rankings used or are they just listed as reference?

Haha one of the factors is another ranking. That's just sad.

They must not value research.

Go TCNJ! But the other problem with using the USNWR rankings is that there isn't any context. TCNJ isn't number four in the overall rankings, for example

For division one woot! Wake at #11!

What an utterly dumb ranking.

Not only do they borrow ranking from others, but they do not even read them properly. The graduation rates for the Division III are mostly incorrect.

haha harvard is ranked number 55!!! do these rankings combine sports and academics is some bizarre combination or something?

the main problem with these rankings is that the US News rankings arent taken in context. For example, both villanova and harvard are listed as #1 on US News, and they are both #1, just on different list. Other than that, these rankings (not exactly rankings, just a compilation of different rankings that makes a lot of sense) are incredibly accurate. How could you not agree that the top 3 overall programs in 1A are duke, stanford, and notre dame?

it does have duke, stanford, and notre dame as the top 1A programs:
http://www.ncsasports.org/Powerrankings/2006/06-DI-A.htm

these rankings are bogus, but no more bogus than any other ranking system. show me the perfect ranking system, please. any kind of ranking of anything will always have its methodology disputed--be it football teams, colleges, or cars. i understand that there is a major flaw in giving harvard/ villanova/ williams all #1 status. other than that, however, i for most part agree with the list, regardless of how it was dervied.

The biggest flaw is that their rankings are constructed entirely of other rankings. No independent research went into these at all. In terms of academics, or the best schools for scholars athletes, my rankings would look nothing like the ones discussed in this forum

The "Overall" rankings are pretty silly, as they mix all kinds of schools, from large universities to tiny LACs. But if you look at the rankings within NCAA Divisions, the rankings seem more or less reasonable.

The rankings attempt to identify schools that are noted for both academic selectivity and athletic success. The results include:

Division I-A led by Duke, Stanford, Notre Dame
Division I-AA led by the Ivies
Division III led by the NESCACs

If you are fortunate enough to be both very smart and athletically gifted, then yes, these colleges probably should be among your top choices.

Hm for some reason in these rankings, under the category of USNEWS Georgetown is given a rank of 237. This can't be right- it's ranked 23. Something seems wrong...
