McGill and UofT are interchangeable internationally, but McGill places higher and more consistently

I don’t know. This is the second year in a row that Toronto (despite losing two spots from last year globally) has placed 1st in Canada on the Times Higher Education World University Ranking. (On last year’s 2010-2011 ranking, Toronto also took 1st place in Canada regarding ‘Engineering & Technology’, ‘Clinical, Pre-clinical & Health’, ‘Physical sciences’, ‘Social Sciences’, and ‘Arts & Humanities’. The only subject area in which it did not take 1st place was ‘Life sciences’; the University of British Columbia took 1st place, with Toronto 2nd and McGill 3rd. The new 2011-2012 THE specific subject area rankings will be released throughout October and November, but I don’t imagine the results being all that different for Canada.)

Toronto also placed 1st in Canada on the 2011 *Academic Ranking of World Universities/I – released August 15, 2011 – as it has done every single year since the ARWU’s inception in 2003. That’s pretty good consistency.

UofT gets no love on these forums.

Huh. I never would have considered UdeM better than queen’s…

What’s wrong with these rankings, Queen’s is a top 3 school in canada. It has the second highest enterance gpa. They keep placing this university at the bottom for being a mid-sized institution.

Ps.: a ranking that says penn state is better than georgetown is not so reliable anyways…

The worldwide rankings look primarily at research output. USNews and Macleans look at undergraduate criteria. Queen’s and Georgetown are not huge research schools but rather they concentrate on undergraduate studies.

To have 2 undisputed universities in the global top 30, and 3 by another measure is awesome.

Canadians HE is in good shape.

McGill and UT are excellent schools.

How come nobody talks about UBC?

Whenever the topic about Canadian universities is brought up, people just keep mentioning McGill and UofT.

Though UT and McGill beat UBC in terms of research output, the latter trumps them in terms of undergrad teaching.

You can back that up with data?

**How come nobody talks about UBC?

This may be the case, but ‘undergraduate teaching’ is not the stuff of high global university rankings. Research power is.

Harvard isn’t Harvard because it provides its students with the best undergraduate experience. Its fame (reputation, prestige) is due to its research power.

spasticity,

I actually think UBC trumps McGill for research.

^^
