Exactly, @marvin100. The fact that Rutgers is still allowed to field a football team is mind boggling. The school loses roughly $1 per second, according to this article by Forbes: http://www.forbes.com/sites/ccap/2015/04/02/losing-at-a-dollar-a-second-rutgers-university/#75284bed17b5
@PurpleTitan I don’t exactly remember the wins-losses records from the late 1930s with UChicago, but I believe their attendance was still strong. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong on this. I remember seeing several images from games where there were crowd sizes that would rival today’s biggest games in FBS.
As a parent of an UChicago graduate, I can attest that Chicago really give an highly intellectual education to all. My D was fortunately attended the school. She was not in the top of her class but she is performing very well in her med school and while most of the students from other schools feel pressured, she can handle the material very smoothly with lots of time for leisure. I am glad she can visit us very frequently because she is only two hours away from home.
I think the higher tuition UChicago charges is worth every penny of it.
@marvin100
Except in China, where USWNR uni rankings (not LACs) are the Bible and the sole criteria students base their decisions on along with the fact that Chinese like to go to schools where there are lots of other Chinese (UCs, UIUC). For them, 5 spots in the rankings is a huge deal. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the same in other countries.
@insanedreamer wow, I did not know this happened.
@insanedreamer – I’m in Korea and I teach a lot of kids from China as well, and I haven’t seen the behavior you describe. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, I guess, but I haven’t seen it.
