High school students continue to apply in record numbers for freshman admission to the University of California, Berkeley, with almost 53,000 students submitting applications, according to data released today (Friday, Jan. 14) by the UC Office of the President. Approximately 52,900 students submitted applications for the fall 2011 freshman class at UC Berkeley, compared to roughly 50,300 who applied for fall 2010 admission.

University of California, officials report that every campus in the UC system experienced an increase in freshman applications when comparing fall 2011 and fall 2010 numbers, creating an overall systemwide increase of 5.7 percent.

I made an Application Data Chart comparing the Top 20 schools (including Berkeley). You can see it here:

What suckers…I would gladly take a scholarship to a CSU these days.

Good GPA + No work (compared to berkeley) + Hot dumb chicks + party campus + actually social peers + small classes (smaller pop and less people attend class b/c most ppl who go there are pretty stupid) + scholarship + not a crappy city = happy 1234

^Probably not. I wouldn’t expect the admission rate to change that much. If there is a change in average GPA/SAT, I would expect it to be minor.

it’s still 2-3 times cheaper than any private school. you have to ask yourself, how much do you want to spend for college tuition? 45k for 4 years, or 120k for 4 years? most would prefer the former.

I read that the UCs are receiving more applications because more high school students are becoming eligible. This means that while many students previously had 2.9s, more are starting to get above the 3.0 minimum. So the seemingly drastic boost in applicants is likely from extremely under-qualified students.
