New Rez

When I visited new Rez it looked completely and utterly wonderful. From some of the students, however, I got the feel that the sense of community wasn't as strong as the one in upper Rez. Is this true? Do they at least do a good job choosing room mates?

hey waves2ya!
i currently live in new rez, so i can try to help you answer any questions you might have about it!
personally, i do feel like there is less of a sense of community: you really have to make an effort to get to know people. although i’ve made a lot of great friends in this rez, if i could go back, i would have probably chosen to live in upper rez (although the new one, la citadelle looks sickkkk)
and i don’t think mcgill does a particularly good job of choosing roommates to be completely honest. some people i know were lucky and it worked out great, but i’ve seen a LOT of roommate drama here. i’m in a single so i’ve been able to avoid that

Thank you so much for answering! Yeah I can’t decide because nothing is more tempting than a big room and double bed in college but at the same time, McGill is so big that I definitely don’t want to have a problem meeting people because I dont want to get lost in the mix. On top of it, I have a boyfriend who, ideally, will be visiting once in a while so I wouldn’t want a roommate who wouldn’t be cool with that.

Single at New Rez is kind of tough, unless you’re a scholarship recipient.
For single rooms, go for RVC, upper rez, University Hall, Prez Rez.

okay, so the housing choices showed up for me on minerva, but I was wondering whether two students could personally request from McGill to room with each other like in some U.S universities, anyone know if that’s possible? thankss

ONLY if you
a) get in the same dorm as the person you want to room with, AND
b) both of you are assigned double rooms.

hmm… okay thanks. and in your above post you mentioned that it was tough to get into New Rez single dorms unless one got a scholarship, what about going for a single room at La Citadelle (new one)?

The thing with New Rez, it sounds really nice. You get your own bathroom and nice beds and such. But dear god, I wish I had picked anywhere else to live this year. I really wish I had gotten an apartment, but I do understand wanting to have some kind of residence experience. But I would really strongly recommend Upper Rez or RVC (just don’t go West Wing unless you like quiet). Trust me, you don’t want to put yourself remotely near the possibility of having a bad roommate. I agree with the above poster that roommates are not matched well. My roommate is bat**** insane and led to extreme stress and a lot of problems this first year. Living in a single will be much more relaxing, and from all accounts Upper Rez is much more tight knit.

New Rez also has a rep for being the snobby rez, and of course there are people here that aren’t like that, but there also are quite a few stuck up jerks, enough that I can comfortably say that reputation is true.

What I’m saying is, I hate New Rez. Stay away.
