NEW SAT ....*sigh*

HI Everyone...I am an old CCer. The change to CC is quite surprising.. I am finally a junior now. I found many New SAT prep books but i dunno which to buy. Due to a limited SAT budget, which SAT books do you recommend to buy and which to borrow?

Here is just a list:

PR's 11 Practice Tests
Official Guide to New SAT, collegeboard
Kaplan's 2400
McGraw Hill's 2400
REA's
Gruber's
Barron's
and other? Which of these books would be best to buy?

Thanks a lot, i tried to search for old threads but due to the new site, i had some difficulties, all help will be appreciated! =)

-Ali

well i dunno about the new sat because im a senior this year, but I thought "10 Real SATs" helpful, also try to get a list of vocab words from past tests, and for the writing well...i guess try the psat writing stuff(I got the barrons)...though I'm sure there are good books about the new SAT though I can't say I've used them...

11 practice tests by pr is SWEEEEEEET
thats all i have
get the critical reading wand other workbooks by kaplan
very good
sparknotes too

I just bought the official SAT book from the CB. Try it. It's only $20. And I think that they're also releasing a new version of the 10R.

There are two new PR books and both are awesome. Definitely also get the official one.

The best way you're going to practice for the SAT is through a great deal of practice tests. Definitely pick up the Princeton's 11 Practice Tests, it's got loads of valuable experience in it.

Also pick up the College Board official book - it's got a fair number of practice tests as well, and it's official. The format on that book is THE format for the test.

Barron's would be another must-have; the other two are just practice tests. If you select Barron's, you will be suffering through small type and in many cases rather poor editing (lots of mistakes, etc). However, Barron's is still the highest quality SAT prep I've seen. The tests are as a rule harder than the actual thing, and the prep is more extensive than PR with a lot more practice problems and a LOT more practice tests.

Kaplan, McGraw Hill, REA, Gruber I would all reccomend against. If you have room for more, I would suggest you try either Princeton Review's WORD SMART or a few workbooks in your weak area.

I think the 11 Practice tests by PR is the best. I feel like the Official guide for the SATs made by Collegeboard is just cutting and pasting from the old 10 Reals, its a decent book. Thats probably 2nd.

new SAT book by college board all the way! All you need in terms of practice.

I'm not sure why Mr. Zoogie "recommends" against McGraw Hill's book.

McGraw-Hill's SAT I is actually a very good book. McGraw Hill 2400 I have no idea about, but the book entitled McGraw-Hill's SAT I is an 800 page book that has a ton of exercises and will soon have a CD added to it that has 5 more practice tests.

The book is designed specifically for those who don't want to necessarily get tutoring help. They can design their own curriculum using the lesson format.

but I agree that the college board book is first on the priority list always because it has REAL exams

CB book wouldd be the 1st one to get if you don't have a lot of savings (like me!), PR book is good, but I had huge score flucations, I either thought math was hard or easy! (1st test-2030, 2nd test-2070, 3rd test-2150, 4th test-1830

I just don't know... I mean... the Princeton Review has all these techniques plus a prestigious 1K course with a guarantee... maybe it's just me.. I seem to trust them better than College Board. I'm leaning towards getting those two Princeton Review books (the practice and the one with the CD) or the College Board with the new 10 real tests and the official guide.

Princeton Review has better colors....

Check with your public and school library, and your guidance office. You can probably find all of these books to use free of charge.

I'm not saying it's a bad book; but if you have a limited budget, then you should probably stop after Princeton Review's 11 Practice tests, Barron's, and the College Board.

What really sucks is that you have 10 sections now and a whopping 3 hours and 45 minutes of testing!

I am a senior, and from the experience i have had with SAT books, since i have like 8...I will say this:

Princeton Review is VERY good. This is a must have. It goes over all the stuff on the SAT, and explains in a easy to understand demeanor.
Buy 10 Real SAT, or whatever it is called for the New SAT
Kaplan 1600, now Kaplan 2400 is not very good. They have good review over CR, but that is about it. On the math, it is convoluted, and does not always show the easiest, fastest solution.
Barrons is good.

What i would do is if you have a lot of time, Buy the 10 REAL SATs, the PR book, and whoevers Verbal and Math workbook-PR, Kaplan are best at this.

I'm worried about math (my scores have ranged from 550-610 Ouch!), cr and w, not so much, those scores have ranged from w 720-740, cr 740-800

so yeah i need to get pr's math workbook,

my math scores are week on Barron's practice Sat's as well

The College Board's new SAT book is good - and a nice feature is that they will score your practice tests online for you and give you feedback about where your weak points are. For a few more bucks, you can get an online service that will score your practice essays. Info. in the book is quite good as well. And it's less than $20 if you order via Amazon.

I've liked Kaplan's so far, and have heard good things about it, but have yet to get to the actual tests. The PSAT one I thought was pretty good. I'll probably pick up the PR/CB ones closer to March.
