New SAT Test Today

My junior son took the new SAT test today, his second try. He took the first new SAT on March 5, but unfortunately the scores aren’t available until mid-May, I understand. He’s going to be in Europe this summer, so he couldn’t register for the June SAT test date, so the test today, instead.

I was apprehensive about his test today because he’s been sleep deprived these past two weeks, and I knew he wasn’t mentally fresh going in. Sure enough, he came out of the test today thinking that his first test was much better all around. He feels pretty confident that his scores for the first test is going to be around 1500, but not so with the second test today. My question is, can he “cancel” today’s test if the scores from his first test on March 5 – which we’ll find out in a few days – turns out to be indeed around 1500 (which I assume is pretty decent and competitive score)? He’s heard a rumor that that’s possible as long as he does so before the scores from today’s test come out?

I believe you have until the Wednesday after the test day to cancel scores. However, you should definitely double-check that.

That being said, when my D took her ACT test she thought she did not do well at all and she came very close to cancelling them. Luckily, she did not, and she scored very well and was done with testing. Just food for thought.

@suzy100 - That thought did go through my head, but not everyone in such situation gets a lucky break… He wants to apply to those highly selective colleges that look at all SAT scores, so he doesn’t want to take the chance. But my mind isn’t made up, yet.

Just want to chime in that my S1 considered cancelling a second try at an SAT subject test after putting in a lot of effort studying for it. He thought he had done worse on it than the first time. I talked him into keeping it because I was curious how he did and didn’t want to have to wonder and never find out. Turned out he did much better on it than the first one.

It’s too late to cancel scores from the March test, unfortunately.

He wants to cancel yesterday’s scores, not March.

Okay, my son’s score from the March test came out to be 1510, and if suzy100 is correct, I’d need to cancel the most recent test by tomorrow. Decision time!! What would you do? If 1510 is considered very competitive and within the “range” for those highly selective colleges, then I’d rather cancel the latest test. But with the new SAT score system, it’s a bit too early to tell what the score of 1510 represents.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question…don’t most selective schools super-score and look at the highest combo? If that’s the case, why cancel?

@bucketDad - Because my son felt that, due to his sleep-deprived condition at the time of taking the latest test, he feels he did worse job in all categories, i.e., potentially nothing to gain by superscoring, and because some schools want to look at all scores, such as at Yale, having a score that is worse than the first one wouldn’t look all that good.

Oh, does anyone know how to go about cancelling the test score? Went to the CB site but no info. I need to call them in order to cancel?

Here you go: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/scores/canceling-scores

@suzy100 - Great, thank you for the link!!

1510 is awfully good. You might want to cancel the second test that was taken under adverse conditions. I would counsel those planning to take the test more than once to wait for the first score to come in (order the score report) go over what you got incorrect, study those areas, practice and then take the second test.
