Alright... what do u think about the Ivies, Duke, GeorgeTown, Emory, Stanford, JHU, Northwestern, Amherst??

Thanks!

Your guidance depart should be able to show you a gray book or scattergrams showing where kids were accepted/rejected/wl'd by SAT and GPA. This will give you a pretty good sense of which schools are good bets and which are long shots. Your gpa looks low, but for your school, it may be good - and your guidance department likely has the data that will answer this question.

In general, you would want your SAT over 2100 for the schools you are looking at. Also, - where are your safeties???? You've probably got a good shot at NU and Emory, but they aren't safeties!

Yea i'm debating on whether or not i should take the SAT's over again just to prove that I can get better scores, but my mom said no because she's tired of me stressing out about these tests, but with a little stduying, i've come a long way, so I htink that this Sat will be the last of my high shcool sstandardized testing and i'm going to end it on a good note

Maybe you should just submit the ACT...if you can. For most schools I think you can. Or just raise the SAT to a mid 2100. You can do it.

Your ACT score is outstanding; schools take the higher of the two scores I believe. In your case, they would disregard your SAT score, which I hope they'll do for me. Why on earth are you telling him/her to retake? A 33 ACT score will do him justice and is definately potent in Ivy admission among other factors.

Um, excuse me. I told him to retake the SAT if he wanted to submit that. But I also made it pretty clear that submitting just the ACT would work.

hohosandtwinkies... are u a hoho or a twinkie?? or do u just like them?

Yea i'm thinking i might take SAT's over again just to match my other score.... my safeties... hm.. my definition of a safety is a school where u'd probably get in and u'd be happy being there... i'm thinking university of rochester? Yea i need to find some places to go see this summer , i'm thinking east coast schools, maybe california... what do u guys recommend?

I like them. My aol sn is the same name. Tasty little things.

BTW, Rochester is a nice safety choice and is def a safety for you.

O haha, I thought perhaps u were a hostess snack like me (a twinky- an abercrombidized asian.. no popping the collar tho) but it's cool anyway!

I'm sorry, but you have no chance at the Ivies. =You need at least a 2150 to be looked at. Your mom's right too - stop stressing and look out.

Some good schools to look at would University of Illinois, University of Alabama, and University of Kentucky. (Assuming you're from the Midwest.)

Also consider the transfer route. Go to a community college for free, then try to transfer. THe nice thing with transferring is that you have a clean slate to start with, no more SATs and ECs. Just your college grades. THen you might be able to transfer into Cornell and UPEnn, or maybe even Harvard.

Don't fall for the "it's gotta be Ivy" mentality. Be realistic and you'll go REALLY far. I say go state school, or if you get the score up a little bit, Purdue and Notre Dame.

bill_smear how what's your justification for this? He/She scored a 33 on his ACT; convert his score and you'll see that it works out. In addition, schools only take the higher of the two scores SAT or ACT.

DUDE, HE ****ING HAS A CHANCE!!!! What does a 33 ACT equal? 1460-1500, 'kay?

Who has an SAT cutoff? Never heard of that. I do know some high 1100s and mid 1200s who got into UPenn. Why? They were extraordinary. And a lot of 1500s got rejected too because adcoms are tired of the same old ****.

I'm gonna assume bill missed the ACT score entirely...

kudos to the delectable-assortment-of-snacks user name.

First, I stand corrected, your ACT is mad high. 33 is awesome, congrats.

Second though I just reread your post and you got a 3.6 GPA!?!? Out of 4.0? Unfortunately, again, I don't know if that's unweighted or what. (I'd better be careful what I say, some people will eat me alive if I lay the smackdown on an Ivy candidate whose scores are similar to theirs.)

No matter how hard the courses are, a 3.6 GPA is no doubt very good, but far from what HYPS are looking for. Just a thought. What school do you go to in the Midwest?

If I were you, I'd definitely look at two schools where I think you're in: Notre Dame and University of Michigan. Both are amazing schools (in many people's opinions better than Cornell and UPenn). University of Michigan is also very generous with financial aid. Give both a look, I know Notre Dame is my number two choice.

Good luck with everything man. Once again, though, don't get caught up with Ivy after Ivy. Look at one or two, but be sure to throw some really good matches like the two above into your search.

Yea my 3.6 is due to the fact that I go to a very challeging private school...partially (in my opinion) soph. was just a bad yeaar with bad teachers (3.36) my adv. math teacher hated me, my ap euro teacher wnated me out of her class because she didn't thinkn i was good enoguh, and my adv. chem teacher didn't know how to teach... but that's the past,, freshman and junior years i have an average of 3.73 Gpa and that's UNWEIGHTED i really wish we would have weighted grades, but just to put things into perspective, if i would weigh my grades to an A in an AP class=5 and an A in a adv. class=4.5 then my cumulative GPa would be a 4.05 Weighted but yea... anything else??

Look at NYU.

yes i think nyu is on my college map... where else would u guys recommened?

also I'm taking a college class at wustl what do u think this will add to my application?

Bill_smear, i dont want to sound like an arse, but do you go to school in some crappy rural area? If someone is in a competitive high school, and taking very hard classes, a 3.6 is easily hyp material..especially with those ACTs..I come from a hs where kids with 3.0s get into hyp, and i know a plethora of other schools where a 3.5 is easily top 10% of your class. the kid has a great chance, especially with a good essay.
