It isn’t at all obvious that you now need to long press on the ‘like’ icon () to get the check mark and light bulb emojis. Maybe it works differently on a laptop, but I think most of us use CC on our phone.
I didn’t use other emojis all that often, but I kind of miss them now that they are gone
I agree. If going forward the thumbs up, check and light bulb are the only options, they should each show without having to long press or hover. If the platform does not allow that, I believe the check and light bulb will rarely be used.
I did use the other emojis and will miss that feature. In previous discussions about this upcoming change, I did not realize that was going away. I guess I just missed that. I also missed that the thumbs up, check and light bulb were only accessed through a shared feature menu. I really wish the features being utilized on this Discourse page were more in line with most other platforms, since that would be more intuitive to users (especially new and infrequent users).
Sorry to sound so negative! I recognize and appreciate the big picture efforts of the admin team. (at least these emojis are still available!)
I know what thumbs up means, but what are the check and light bulb supposed to mean?
My .02: Removing the extensive emoji reply list is a HUGE negative. So if I want to use a more appropriate emoji, I have to Quote thread and select an emoji in the reply post. Nice.
I think under the old system, emojis were not being counted nor were the posters being given notification of them. Now, people will have to use them less “dismissively”.
I appreciate your appreciation! This particular change ought to help stabilize the way the site is displayed. I do plan on adding more emojis to the list, but I want to make sure we don’t have any technical problems with the current system.
If you all missed it, the details of the change can be found in this post:
But, I have to reply to you to use the emoji on my keyboards, vs just putting an emoji directly on your post…the emoji icon used to be to the left of the thumbs up.
And how is lightbulb supposed to mean “helpful”? Lightbulb means “I have an idea”. A helpful emoji might be . That seems to be the most common one for “thanks”, so could kind of go for “helpful”, too.
I think a heart or would be good for a hug/sympathy and // are all good for “that post was right on the money”.
@CC_Jon
If I hover over the thumbs up icon, it’s red. I immediately wonder what I have done wrong. Please make it green or blue or any other color. Red is universally a color that indicates a problem, at least in technology.
Been through years and years of changes here but this one I really don’t like (will we really get more choices coming??). I feel like there are going to be lots of additional posts that are just people posting an appropriate emoticon (hug, breaking heart, yum, etc.) so we will all just be doing more scrolling through emoticons posts not text posts.
Emoticons are a true way of communicating and conveying an opinion. In a brief manner.
Maybe the goal here IS increasing the # of posts through those additional posts of emoticons only. You know, more posts, more ads, more $$$??
