New Student Conference

If a student attends a New Student Conference in mid- to late-July, do they run the risk of not being able to register for the classes they need/want? Are the good class times/professors already taken?

Since the trip to the NSC will be expensive for me (my airfare alone would be over $600), should I wait and just attend the last scheduled conference (August 23-24) during Gig 'Em week, as I would already be there...or is that just really too late to register?

Thanks!

It really doesn’t matter which NSC your student attends. When my daughter was planning her schedule a few days before her conference she had a little bit of a panic because she thought all the classes she wanted were already full. Then, once we arrived at the NSC, her adviser told the group that they open up a few spaces in the freshman course at each conference. This allows students to possibly get the class they want no matter which NSC they attend. I have heard of students that went in June who didn’t get a course they wanted but a student who went in August did and vice versa. Go when it is convenient for you. My daughter got all the courses she wanted. Of the four courses she took, she was able to get her first choice of times and the other two were her second choice of times. The important thing was that she got the courses she wanted even though it may not have been at the exact time she wanted. Good luck and welcome to the Aggie family.

PNWguy - it wont make much difference. Depending on which major you are in, your advisor may have your schedule already pre-done for you, just waiting for your ok or minor adjustments at NSC. They do open new slots for freshmen at all NSC dates - so there will be some open for you.
Are you planning on going to Fish Camp too?

Thanks aggiemom and klparker…that takes a little pressure off.

I was a bit concerned b/c I think, with the exception of ENGR 111, 112, and Chem 107/117, I’ll be starting my sophomore aero engineering classes my first year.

Do you think there would still be space in Statics and/or Materials the first semester, given that all of the sophomores have already enrolled? If I absolutely need these classes to have at least 12 units, are overrides given?

Yes, I am planning on FISH camp August 16-19, leading right into move-in day on the 21st.

You may have a little more trouble getting the soph level classes you want, but do not panic. Your adviser will help you fill in the blanks. Absolutely do not panic. My daughter went to one of her (hopeful) profs and asked if he would give her a spot in his closed class. He wrote her adviser a note, adviser pushed her into the closed class. So it can be done.

Keep on calling them from time to time and ask if they have any open spots in one of the earlier conferences. Last year, my NSC was the last one in August, and I kept calling and I got a much earlier one in June.

They will most likely open a spot for you in materials and statics.

^@123abc456,
Who did you keep calling to get a much earlier NSC?
Thanks!
