New Student Conference

Just wondered if anyone is planning to attend the New Student Conference May 25-26?

I will be.

How early did yall sign up? Because theyre all full except in august

I signed up the second week of April by mail and got a response back the next week.

Signed up pretty much the day we were able to.

Booked up for June 2-3.

My son signed up the first day that the website was open for registering. He had heard they fill up fast.

Now he is in a quandary. He is signed up for the May 25-26 NSC, but he is doing lifeguard training till the end of the month for beach patrol in Galveston. On May 25 they are having their final test and it's a big competition with a 3 hour race involving swimming, running, climbing rock walls, etc. He really wants to do it. So, he is planning to call A&M today to find out if he can move his NSC to another date. From what you guys have said, that doesn't sound very doable. Oh well, he can always pray that the race will get rained out and they'll have to reschedule it! :-)

relientr,
You are right. My son called to see about rescheduling, and they were full until August. He decided to keep the time he has and he'll just have to miss the lifeguard test.

Well, we went to the NSC last week. It was a lot of fun, but registration was kind of a nightmare. Our son was in the first group of freshmen to register, but most of the classes he wanted were full already.

He needs to take 23 hours of French for his major, and his advisor told him, "Well, I'm afraid the French classes are already full, so you'll have to start them next year." What?! Well, he lucked out because he took French 101 at the community college, and French 102 had one opening left in it. He got that slot.

They were really pushing admission to the honors program, but all the honors classes that our son could take were full already.

All in all, it was a pretty frustrating experience. You go over and look at this multi-million dollar recreation center they have built, but then you find that you can't get any classes. I'm thinking they should have spent the money on professors instead.

Aster22, how was your experience with registration?

Well I got back from the June 2-3 registration also and I must say registration was a snap.

BUT that's only because Biomedical Science students already have their classes all filled out and the schedules are already done up for you. You just get handed a piece of paper with 3 schedules on it and you select the one you like.

The weird part is that I have no biology class. I have an 'animal science' class but it's not the same thing. Also I have no math classes either. It's really weird the way my schedule is set up but they stressed that we trust our advisors and the one I was talking with said he'd been doing this for 20 years so I guess (hope) he knows what he's doing.

All in all it was a good experience for me.

timely, what is s's major? i dont have my conference till june 21- what happens if all the classes are full? thats doesnt quite seem fair...

Our s is in International Studies. He wasn't even trying to get any classes in his major. It's just that he was interested in being in the Honors program, but the honors classes were full. He was really sweating getting that French class, but got it.

If you are looking for any freshman level foreign language classes, you might have some difficulty. Also, because s's French class is 5 days a week (from 11 - 12:20, or something like that), when we would find a section of a class open, it would conflict with French. Maybe you won't have the same difficulties.

Oh, and be sure to check the message I posted titled "course schedules". There is a link there for the schedules and you can search for the classes you are planning to take and find out which sections still have open seats.

One thing I figured out is that it appears they hold open some sections of popular classes and open a few at each New Student Conference. This is true of classes like Freshman English Composition. A lot of the sections say, "Seats Available - 0". I think that for each conference, they add a bunch of available seats to those sections so they are available for those attending that conference.

i sure hope so. i guess i'll find out next week worried smile

Timely, my conference went well. I was glad that I went to the first NSC or I would not have been able to get organic chem. Just like Ag2013 my major is Biomedical Science so the registration experience went well for me.

Aster: You got organic chem? I didn't even get a biology class.

Ag2013: what classes were you able to get?

I got in an animal science class (not biology), a BIMS class (not biology either), a chemistry class (not organic, just chemistry), and a history class.

Basically they're making me re-do my junior and senior year of high school

Ag2013,
Are these classes going to count towards your degree plan?

I guess so. I hope so.

I didn't pick them. They gave all BIMS people a sheet of paper with three schedules on it. One was labelled Medical, the other was Veterinary, and the other was Allied Medical (or something like that).

I circled veterinary since that's what I'm doing and those are the classes they had on them.

They tell us to listen to our advisors (dunno how many times I heard THAT while at NSC) so I guess that's what I'll have to do.

Hope they don't screw me over.
