I don’t see any discussion of SDSU New Student Convocation. I will be moving my son into the dorms on 8/24 and the New Student Convocation is the next day. Is this important for parents/families to attend as well? Do students sit with family or no? Is it during the day or evening? Any info appreciated.
My husband and I attended with our son and we all sat together. Important? Really depends upon your prospective but I found in inspirational for the New Freshman to be introduced to the school and to begin on their new academic journey into college. My son found in boring.
The Convocation was in the morning and since we stayed overnight it was a good way to say goodbye after moving him in.
Convocation was great experience. The students/families were first sorted by college before heading into Viejas Arena. There were 12,000 folks comprised of new students, family and faculty / staff. The engineering students were seated on the floor level. It took a while to get everyone seated and the last groups were still entering when the Deans were called to the stage one at a time. The interim Provost - Dr. Johnson did a good job introducing the deans and addressing the students and formally welcoming them into the academic community. Fun fact: this year the school welcomed only 18 SDSU Merit Scholars. The speech by AS President was touching and inspirational. His delivery was very professional and impressive. Glad we attended.
