Sure, but doesn’t this prove the implicit point of the post - that student loans are not without potential consequences that reverberate for many years after the fact? Shouldn’t more students and families understand this?
It’s not necessarily like a credit card loss that gets charged off and the worst hit you take is to your credit.
I don’t think the federal government goes after people in this manner for $2600 either. Sounds like, from what we know, that they went after him for ignoring court orders. Judges will tend to do that. And my guess is there is more to the story than we are hearing and it would not paint this fellow in a very favorable light.
^^They originally did sue him for the small debt ($1500 or $2600). That’s how the court got involved for him to be arrested for ignoring the court order. The original debt was small. Ignoring it brought big trouble.
Most states have bounced check laws that allow recovery of 3x the amount of the check or a minimum of $100. If the person could only recover the $10, or even $30, it isn’t worth the trouble to recover, so the law sets a minimum. Plus attorney’s fees. Plus any charge your bank may have assessed. A huge penalty for a small initial amount.
