new student orientation 2011

anyone know how to sign up? and do we pick the date we want?

thanks!

I think this, and many other questions will be answered in the letters all admitees should be receiving any day now. But, from what I’ve heard, you do pick your own, and there’s a list of all dates on th UF site:

Dates: [Dates | Orientation | New Student and Family Programs | The Dean of Students Office | University of Florida](http://www.dso.ufl.edu/nsfp/orientation/dates.php)

Orientation info in general: [Orientation | New Student and Family Programs | The Dean of Students Office | University of Florida](http://www.dso.ufl.edu/nsfp/orientation/)

The first dates arent until May?!? Thats kind of late. I want to go now, I know they have tours available now but anything special for admitted students before these May dates?

So I was reading about orientation and how we have to stay there for two days in one of their dorms. Do parents and guests stay also?

Yes, parents do stay, but not with students. Students stay in the dorms (Broward) with other students. The first day is for tours an information session and the second day is for registering for classes.

Thanks! So then are we sharing dorms with our new roomates then?

my son was accepted for this Fall and he is undecided. So this past weekend since he didnt have school on Friday or Monday. We drove up to Gville on Thursday night. On Friday we took a walking tour that was excellent. Then at 1pm we attended an engineering seminar held by the college of engineering that was also excellent. After that we walked over to the enviromental engineering dept, just to look around. And we were lucky enough to find the Env Engineering Dept head of undergraduate studies. We had a great talk with him. This was pure luck since we had tried to email him all week with no success. Afrer we met with him we walked over and paid the $200 for the housing contract.

So yes in my opinion it is worth visiting now. The more you become familiar with the campus NOW the easier it will be LATER.

Oh and one more thing. On Saturday my son rented a bike at a bike shop behind the Gator Shop on University Ave. I think he paid $20 for the day. He rode for 3 hours all over campus. He was able to speak with some students that gave him great advice.

Before this weekend he was 50:50 between UF and Ga Tech. However after his bike ride and seeing how nice everyone was and how they were willing to help him. He is not 80:20 UF:Ga Tech. We are just waiting for some scholarship information from Tech. Then HE will decide.

Ahhhh Preview. I’m graduating this semester and preview still ranks as the low point in my career at UF.

I don’t know if it’s changed in the last 4 years, but the way housing for preview works is that they stick you all in broward dungeon, and you room with whoever happens to be in line next to you. So, if you go with friends make sure into line together. Also avoid that kid who looks like he hasn’t showered in his entire highschool career. You can chose from any number of preview slots so they couldn’t match you with the people you’re going to live with. If you’re smart and coming in with a bunch of credit, the earlier the better in hopes everything won’t be full, they only hold slots in the “general” classes, so if you need something other then Calc/Chem1, early is better.

thanks for all the input guys! it was a great help!

We chose classes for preview right?

If AP/IB scores don’t come out until mid-July, how do we take into account those possible credits?

You estimate your scores, and then signup for classes based on your estimate. So if you think you’re gonna place out of chem 1, you just signup for chem 2. When you get your scores, if your estimate was wrong, you just fix it yourself.

Awesome… Thanks Zaersz

What if I’m starting Summer^? How many classes do people take in the Summer?

I would recommend one or two. Get acclimated to college life. I personally never took more then that, even once I was used to the grind.

It’s possible to do more then that, but I think that makes you insane.
