New Student Questions!

Hey guys! I'm a new Spring transfer to Cal and I just signed up for a few classes in Phase I. I am just a little confused about how to plan my schedule, and as to what classes I can take. I was hoping you guys could look through my schedule of the classes I just signed up for and give me advice as to whether you think I am on the right track or not. Also, I am a history major. ( :

My Schedule:

CCN Course Section Units Grade Option
39261 HISTORY 100 02 LEC 4 Letter Grade

39585 HISTORY 126B 01 LEC 4 Letter Grade

71798 POL SCI 179 01 LEC 1 P/NP

81906 SOCIOL 191 01 SEM 1 P/NP

Here are the course descriptions provided (of the two classes I am confused about):

Undergraduate Colloquium on Political Science -- Political Science (POL SCI) 179 [1 units]
Course Format: One hour of lecture per week.
Credit option: Course may be repeated for credit.

Sociology Proseminar -- Sociology (SOCIOL) 191 [1 units]

My Problem:

Basically, I am confused about the poli sci and the sociology classes.

Am I allowed to take these courses (are they just for graduate students, freshman, etc?) and will they will benefit me as a history major? More so, I am confused as to what exactly each one of the two final classes (the proseminar and the colloquium course) actually are? The brief descriptions provided on tele-bears course listings was confusing and minimal in information.

Also, I plan to take a de-cal and edu TRSP class in order to fill up my 13 units for my first semester during phase II of registration. Does this sound like a decent schedule? Am I on the right track? If you guys could let me know, or just give me any advice or opinions, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you! ( :

PS 179 is a fun class. You’ll enjoy it.

The two 1 unit classes will only help you get upper div classes outside your major and fill up your units. besides that, they are useless.

179 is basically a seminar where people from California come in and talk to you (and the other 600 students) about issues in CA. A lot of people end up skipping it unless there’s a famous person coming in. The professor is an awesome law and PoliSci prof who knows that it’s just a fun class. You listen, maybe take noes, w/e…then in the last week of classes you take a 40-60 question True/False test (super easy) that determines if you pass or fail. It’s fun and you sometimes get to hear about some good issues or famous people (we had Gavin Newsom come in and talk a couple semesters ago and Kamala Harris this semester). You’ll like it…it’s fun.

Okay well thats good to know! Basically I just took all the advice of those from Calso and decided to only sign up for ywo major courses and fill the rest of my units with electives until I got to 13 units…so you thnk my schedule is functional? Or am I putting to many “electives” in my schedule? I was told 3 history classes of 4 units is to much reading and that I would kill myself…lol

*sorry for all the typos! lol im a lazy typer…

itscoolnoonereallycares :D

i suppose it’s functional. Keep it at 13 if you want to adjust to classes at berkeley but if you’re planning on applying to a graduate program, I would think that more units than the minimum would look better (after your first semester).
