New student, what to bring?

What should a freshman bring with him when he moves into a dorm room? Refridge? Microwave? What is realistic to bring?

No one knows?

I know this sounds girly, but there are a ton of checklists on pinterest that really help.

Ok, thanks.

Mine brought a small fridge.

You should have received a list from the university. You need to contact your roommates via your triton facebook account. Each roommate should be responsible for one large item: fridge from target, flat screen, microwave. The rooms at UCSD are small.

IIRC there is already a microwave outside of my kids dorm, in the shared area.

I’m guessing there are 3 in your room. You can have up to a 5cf fridge in your room so try to coordinate with your roommates to buy one. We got one on CL for $50. The rooms are small, so best to share a printer also if you decide to keep one in the room. The dorms have a microwave so no need for one in the room. Other things to bring:

Fan
Extension cords-2
Surge protector
Desk lamp or one that hooks to your bed frame
Command hooks for closets/walls- anything to utilize available space
Hanging shoe organizer to save space- $8 @ Target
Beach towel + regular ones-2 sets
Extra long sheet set and mattress protector, blanket, bedspread
Foam mattress topper-optional. We got this one on Amazon for $60: Sleep Innovations 2-Inch Memory Foam Twin XL Mattress Topper
Laundry basket: tall and skinny is better for space reasons/detergent/softener
Hangers
Something to carry shower stuff to bathroom
Flip flops for shower
Skateboard or bike- my son ended up not using his bike as his long board was more convenient
Maybe a bowl, cup, and a fork and spoon, can opener
Shampoo, soap, etc.
Basic meds- Tylenol, Nyquil, bandaid, etc.
Basketball, soccer ball, surfboard, etc if desired

Most people on my son’s floor didn’t have tv’s in the room. Their floor did have one in the common area. The rooms are small and you can always watch stuff on your computer. Their floor also bought a used Xbox.

Other than your clothes, you don’t need much else. The rooms are very crowded so the less you take the better. One thing that was very helpful at move in was a small collapsible dolly and bungee cords. Leave your clothes on hangers to move them. It’s easy to pack things in plastic bins and then have someone take them back home after you unpack. You might throw in some snacks too. My son kept some cereal, crackers, etc on his closet shelf.

I was under the impression microwaves were not allowed in dorm rooms.

Not inside dorms but outside near the common area.

Refrigerator / Microwave (residence hall style)
You may bring your own mini refrigerator, if it is smaller than five cubic feet and has a safe UL-approved electrical system. We recommend a micro fridge which will save on energy and help keep our community “green”! Allowable wattage for microwaves is up to 700 watts.

My older son had a combo microwave/refrig in his room at Muir last year. Common area does have a microwave as well.
