As someone who is considering applying to the school, I am dismayed by NYU’s decision. While it is nice to see a new program, they also did away with CAP 21(makes sense but I think with as many that want musical theater training 2 musical theater programs would have worked well) and the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute(which was my first choice). The loss of the Strasberg studio is going to have a major effect on the program. Many of Tisch’s most successful alumni came out of the Strasberg studio. Adler was second only to Strasberg, then the rest of their successes were spread throughout the other studios.

I think they are working hard to get the best working professionals to be teachers at this new studio. Although only time will tell, I believe they are working hard to create a program that will create strong actors.

None of us have any way of knowing if this will be the case. In what way do you anticipate these changes affecting the program itself? It will be interesting to see how many kids audition this year. With all the predictions of doom and gloom from some quarters, my guess is that it will have no noticeable effect on the numbers.

I do not believe the loss of Strasberg will have an effect. MANY who apply to Tisch are not applying simply because they want Strasberg (nor do they have a say in which studio they will be placed anyway) but because they want to attend Tisch. Many would be willing to accept more than one studio. In fact, all the ED kids HAVE to be willing to. And many who attend Tisch who got in RD, are not placed in their first choice studio and still elect to attend. I believe there would be just a small number of people who would ONLY be willing to attend Tisch ONLY if placed in Strasberg.

brad, from YOUR post, while Strasberg was your first choice studio, even YOU say you are “considering applying to Tisch” anyway. So, it is not Strasberg or bust for you either. :)

Further, let’s not forget that the set up at Tisch is that there is primary studio and advanced studio. Many students at Tisch elect to do more than one studio. My D has many friends who started in Strasberg who elected to do a different studio for advanced studio.

I seriously doubt that the loss of Strasberg, wonderful as it is, will have any real negative impact on the number of young actors auditioning for NYU Tisch drama. I do think that musical theater kids are going to want more information once they know that they will NOT be considered for Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21), which is apparently the biggest draw of any studio in the Tisch drama arsenal. I am told that more than half of the kids who audition at Tisch drama want to be placed in CAP.

I hope that the New Studio will post its curriculum for this year’s round of applicants. I have no doubt about its quality but people would like to examine curriculum and such in terms of fit. This is mostly in relation to MT applicants since that is the only true MT studio (as CAP was).
