My son has only applied to2 instate schools. Stonybrook & Binghamton for computer science. He has been accepted ton both. As of know Binghamton also offered the Scholars program. Waiting other if in the honors program at Stonybrook.
Stony rook has offered 2 scholarship, president $4000 & NMF $3000. Binghamton doesn’t offer scholarships to freshman, but did get a stipend for $3500 for honors extra (study aboard research or internship). we live 40 min away from sronybook & really wants to go away & has heard large computer population at stony brook. How is Binghamton for CS, & will graduating in honors help with future jobs or grad school?
It’s impossible to say how now anything about his grad school options. Future jobs he will be okay at Bing. It’s more what you can do than where you went to school, although there’s often a correlation. Correlation is not causation. Both programs are ABET accredited, which is good. If I were choosing, and money weren’t an option, I would choose Binghamton over Stony Brook because SB is more of a commuter school than is Binghamton. Binghamton graduated 73 in CS while SB graduated 199. I would like the smaller-sized Binghamton because it’s not so huge that you can get lost.
SBU’s program is more well known than Bing’s, but that’s only one part of college life. Bing does have a less well-known program, but as a result has smaller class sizes.
As for honors program, I don’t see that making a huge difference.
In the end, if your son really wants to dorm, and thinks that it is worth paying extra, then he should go to BIng.
Both fine options. Stony Brook has a great reputation for STEM majors like CS. I know of several Long Island kids who went to SB, lived in dorms, graduated with CS degrees and landed excellent jobs starting at around $70K. A lot of LI kids eschew SB because it’s too close to home, but it’s a school whose star is rising. (Interestingly, when you look at Newsday’s coverage of where all the valedictorians & salutatorians are going each year, Stony Brook is always one of the top 3 destinations.) That said, I’ve also heard anecdotally that the program is tough–but I imagine CS is tough anywhere. Is there the possibility for your S to study abroad for a semester? Re; graduating with honors I don’t think it makes much difference. Final GPA is what counts. Generally, if you’re accepted into an honors program it has other perks: smaller classes, better dorms, early registration for classes, etc.
in the end it will be my sons decision. He is waiting to hear from SB about there honors program still. Binghamton does include a stipend for for study aboard, or summer internship or summer research. Will definitely compare what they both offer. thank you
