New thread for cat lovers

@rumrunner - hugs to your D. hope she gets some furry snuggle time soon.

Or kitty Mysty, is back to her normal self. Wow. We had to get a compounded antibiotic and was finally able to give her the meds for the rest of the month. She had a followup with the endocrinologist in the middle of January. Doctor did a little blood work and everything came back normal! Told us to followup with her regular vet in the summer for another round of blood work to make sure, but otherwise she is back to normal.

Sure enough- the last few weeks she has been back to chasing our new kitty around the house on the odd occasion. She is eating normally, more vocal about feeding time, wants to eat EVERYTHING, so we are having to pick up the new kittyā€™s bowl as soon as she is finished or Mysty will eat that too! the little pig! :))

Because she has lost some weight, she is now able to run up and down the stairs and it seems as if she has a little more energy. So things are back to normal in the doodle household. yay.

How does a team from top research schools get to publish in the most prestigious scientific journal? By doing cutting edge research, of course. The topic of said cutting edge research? Cats drinking water!

Fascinating!

Ahhh. My ā€œold ladyā€ is sitting on my lap as I read this. And just now, lirerally, my S showed me a video of his gfā€™s cat. Yes, we are cat people! :))

Yesterday we started making end-of-life decisions for Pug. Sheā€™ll be 13 on May 17. A tad over a year ago, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given only six months to a year to live. Considering weā€™ve passed the year mark, sheā€™s done well but sheā€™s starting her decline. Yesterday, the vet told us sheā€™s anemic and ā€œlegally blind.ā€ The blindness comes from broken blood vessels at the back of her eyes, probably caused by high blood pressure or hyperthyroidism. Anyway, too much medical jargon. Bottom line, we can treat some of this somewhat but have declined. I want her happy and comfortable - eating her favorite foods and not having to take yet another pill (already one steroid a day). I wouldnā€™t hesitate if a cure was in sight but it isnā€™t. Fortunately, the vet agreed with me. Prognosis - three to six months (which means sheā€™s lived three to six month longer than predicted a year ago). Her litter mate Callie was diagnosed two weeks ago with stomach cancer (six months to a year to live). Our outside cat Iggy (9 years old) manages to hang in with his chronic kidney failure. Iā€™m running a cat hospice. I hate this.

Bright note - Toby (4 years old) is healthy and happy, convinced that one and all love him (which they do).

*All four cats are rescues from our neighborhood.

Hugs, ignatius. My friends just had to make end of life decision for my ā€œgodkittyā€
(I rescued him and his sister and brought them to her house ā€œto pick oneā€ - she kept them both). It was devastating for her and her BF who never had cats in his life. I cried for a few days after that, too, but it was the right decision.

So sad to hear of the end of life issues for your kitties, people. :frowning:

On a positive note, look at these magnificent creatures. They are the wild cousins to our cat persons.

Iā€™m so sorry @Ignatius.

Okay, so this is a mean prank pulled on a girl after she has wisdom teeth surgery. But at about 2:14, Iā€™m totally dying laughing. The girl thinks the zombie apocalypse is imminent, and she has to choose between taking her dog or her catā€¦ Brothersā€¦grrrā€¦

OMG, so sorry! My cat is also that age. Hugs to you, ignatius. :frowning:

I am on the verge of making the decision to put my almost 14 yr old Maine Coon down. His health has been declining for some timeā€¦he no longer grooms himself, is arthritic in his hips / back legs, doesnā€™t eat very much and has lost weight.
The last few days,he has stopped using his litter box and peed all over my bathroom floor and pooped on the floor outside of the litter boxes.
To me, the handwriting is on the wall , but two of my kids are giving me resistance to making the decision. One of them will be home this weekend for her birthday , but the other has no plans to come home in the foreseeable future. I just canā€™t deal with the mess and I know he is trying to tell me that he is failing.

He is my longest living cat :frowning:

Thatā€™s so sad @ignatius . It sounds like this came sooner than what was expected. :frowning: Hugs to you.

Hugs to all of you who have had to make the hard decisions about your kitties that are part of the family. Our cat would have been 20 years old on June 1st. We got her at 3 months old for D1ā€™s 5th birthday. She was a beautiful long haired tortoiseshell. She has been in very good health her entire life (always lived indoors). We had to make the decision a week ago to put her down as could no long walk and stopped eating and drinking. She went down hill very quickly which in the end was a blessing as we never would have wanted her to linger or suffer. It was extremely hard for our family. Fortunately both girls live nearby so we could all be with her at the end. There were many tears shed by all as she was the best cat ever for 2 little girls to grow up with. I hate coming home after work each day to the house without her. The special ones take a piece of your heart with them.

@lje62, this is an excruciating decision. Have you talked to the vet? What does she advise? If thereā€™s nothing that can be done to improve her health and the time to euthanize the cat is here, Iā€™d offer my children the opportunity to come home and be with the cat while itā€™s done, and then Iā€™d screw up my courage and make the decision. If it helps, we had a vet come to our house so that the cat could be in a place she loved at the end. Itā€™s very, very sad no matter what but that was a small comfort.

ignatius, hugs to you. So very sad. Circle of life.

Hugs, ignatius.

@3girls3cats , only one of my daughters can come home. The other is weeks away from graduating and she is 500 miles away with zero free time. She is studying for finals, boards while working per diem and also 3 clinicalsā€¦I feel bad about that , but it just isnā€™t possible. I warned them all at Christmastime that he was beginning to fail. He can no longer retract his back claws , so he is constantly getting stuck on the carpet and he is in pain. I donā€™t want him to suffer .
I talked to the vet about him months ago and he told me to keep an eye on the very things that he is doing now ( no longer using his box, decreased appetite and no longer grooming himself ) I have been through this with several cats over the years and it never gets easier.

This is so depressing. Add me to the list. Taking things one week at a time with a 17 year old boy in renal failure.

Hugs, juniebug and lje. It is really, really hard to let them go, but doing ithumanely is a better alternative to letting them suffer.
