I am so sorry @Nrdsb4…
@Nrdsb4, please let your D know how sorry we are and understand how difficult the past few weeks have been for her. BTDT, and that deep grief comes from deep love.
My niece just got a Siberian. What a gorgeous cat.
It was living with his cat dad and there started to be issues, so owner needed to re-home him.
They didn’t have to pay the going rate ($1000-$1700) but way more than a normal car rescue.
Supposedly, Siberians are hypoallergenic- even though the have very fluffy coat.
I had no idea some cats are so expensive.
Check out the cost of a Savannah Cat!
Yikes!
I can’t imagine spending that much on a cat. But I have a friend who spends F1 Savannah Cat prices on handbags. So, I suppose I shouldn’t be so shocked.
I just finally got our new little kitten (a Bengal - also an expensive breed) to the vet for her kitty checkup. Couldn’t do it sooner bc of COVID rules and then very busy as soon as they were lifted a little.
Vet says she has a heart murmur. She could grow out of it, or it could be more serious. I let the breeder know. Not sure how this will play out. We’ve only had her 2 weeks tomorrow, but she’s already a well loved part of our family.
My dog was just diagnosed with a mitral valve heart murmur which is very common with her breed, but onset isn’t until 8 or 9 yrs old. My mom’s dog - same breed as mine - lived 5 more years after diagnosis but with meds.
My pup is having her work up next week and I’ll find out how much heart damage she might have and then which meds she’ll need to be on.
Is your vet going to do any tests to find out more info on it?
@emilybee, it sounds like it’s not “serious” and will likely go away.
The breeder indicated this isn’t abnormal in Bengal kittens, and she should outgrow it. The vet said it may be something called an “innocent” murmur, which they outgrow, so sounds consistent.
So, I’m going to try not to worry for now.
I hope the news turns out OK for your pup.
We had a domestic shorthair cat that had a heart issue, and he lived to be 15, with just a cheap pill being given to him every day, but I know even the testing is not cheap.
@2014mom, sounds like your kitty will be ok. I’ve heard of innocent murmurs before but in people.
I wouldn’t worry either.
I’m expecting a big bill next week, plus my other dog is having his teeth cleaned the same day. That alone is $400.
Anyone drive cross country with cats? We have 2 we need to return home. 36 hours driving time (3 days minimum). Flights would take about 10+ hours with wait time & connections. Neither choice is ideal, especially based on my last flight experience. Plus returning a car would be helpful as well. We were wondering if two extra large carriers in a hatchback would be ok.
I used to drive 2000 miles each way from home-college-home with my cat in a carrier. I found that throwing a towel over if was the only way to get her to stop crying. Other than that no issues.
@emilybee, what do you do about bathroom breaks- Put something on the bottom of the carrier?
I have never attempted to travel further than the vet with our cats.
I honestly don’t remember. It was more than 40 years ago. Maybe when I stopped for breaks I put litter box out and fed her.
We always drove straight through - 24 hrs. Oh to be that young again.
There is nothing sweeter than a little kitten climbing up the chair into your lap and promptly falling asleep.
There is nothing fun however, about the little kitten and the bigger cat not getting along. (Actually, it may be we are getting “too involved,” but my husband can’t help himself.) We are definitely a work in progress in this area.
It’s been a tough week. Got home a little while ago after letting our sweet girl go. RIP dear Juliet. Parting is such sweet sorrow.
2002-2020
I so sorry, @Nrdsb4, they take a piece of your heart with them.
So sorry @Nrdsb4.
She had a long life, but it’s never easy to let them go.
Virtual hug to you {}
I’m sorry for your loss. It sounds as though Juliet hit the jackpot for her nine lives though.
So sorry @Nrdsb4… it really hurts to lose them. RIP, Juliet.
So, we’ve gone from being worried that the big cat will hurt the little kitten to being worried the kitten will hurt the big cat, all within about 3 (LLLLOOONNNGGG) weeks.
The little kitten still seems to often want nothing more than to play with (or torture) the big cat. Our older cat has been SO tolerant.
I don’t know if the “doggie downers” (anti-anxiety supplement) from the vet fo the bigger cat helped or not, and I can’t decide if I’m going to ask for more from the vet or not (They’re not cheap).
