New thread for cat lovers

I have to admit that I never even thought of it as “stealing” until now, because I am sure our cats never had a concept of whether food was theirs or not - just food that was there!

Our cat is becoming a real nuisance. After being sick last year, we needed to keep an eye on him so moved his food and water bowls to the kitchen. We eventually moved them back to the basement, and it was a disaster. He literally started losing weight and barely ate anything because he couldn’t stand being alone while eating. After several weeks of this, we gave up. His food and water remains in the kitchen snd it’s a pain.

Any one else had a situation like this? We really want to get him out of the kitchen.

@somemom our previous cat barfed. We tried everything under the sun…different foods included, dividing meals into portions (that helped because we gave her 1/3 at a time…less to barf).

We asked the vet and he said “some cats do that”.

We did find that Purina Sensitive Systems helped a little, and our friend said it totally helped her cat.

My rescue cat came with the instructions to use Royal Canin Sensitive Gastrointestinal, moderate calorie, a prescription food, as she had been quite sick at a point. I give her a bit of canned food in addition, and tried that Purina Sensitive Systems which she refused. The Royal Canin is crazy expensive, but she is thriving. At a point I will try some other foods of that brand as not needing the prescription would be nice.

Amazing story!!! With a happy end:

Help needed. My cat Opie had major surgery on April 20. He medically-boarded till April 30. The vets felt the surgery went well. The only problem stemmed from lack of appetite. He ate just enough but no more than half of expected food. The problem has continued here at home. I feel like he’s even eating only 1/4 of expected food and that’s with me coaxing or using a syringe to get something in him. I’ve tried every trick I know to no avail. Other than the not eating he seems content - lots of sleeping, some interest in a toy or two, enjoying chin and tummy rubs/socialization. Help … help … help.

Maybe I should just let him be and he’ll finally eat when hungry?

Ignatius, have you tried an appetite stimulant like Mirtazapine?
It can be given orally or transdermally. Transdermal is a blessing, I put a tiny dab on my kitty’s ear every other day which was so much better than trying to use a pill popper on Caleb.
It really helped-put some weight on Caleb after pancreatitis flares.

Good luck!

Thank you. I called the vet this morning and asked about an appetite stimulant. I stayed up last night and, using a syringe, fed him a mix of baby food meat and water - a broth of sorts. He endured a ml about every 10-15 minutes for a couple hours but it seemed to help in that he seems perkier today. I’m doing the same today only with less frequency and he is eating some kibble, if I toss it right in front of him - a few pieces at a time.

Our vet suggested chicken or turkey babyfood after a bout of pancreatitis to encourage eating. It was still a slow return to normal eating, but it did help. We now sometimes offer it as a treat.

How is your kitty doing today? I hope his appetite has returned, cats can be so hard to get eating again after they’ve been sick.
Hope he’s feeling better.

Thank you for asking. He’s eating better today and seems more interested in, well, just about everything.

FYI: He fractured his hip. I have no idea how. He’s young - 18 months - healthy and has never been outside.

I need help. Our cat is diabetic. She was in the hospital several weeks ago with pancreatitis. The hospital advised us to feed her prescription food, and to only feed her twice a day.
Our regular vet says we can/should leave dry food out for her all of the time, and give her wet twice a day, right before her insulin.
We are feeding her Purina Pro plan prescription, both wet and dry.
Our vet actually didn’t recommend changing her diet, but instead giving her more insulin if necessary early on, but since the hospital sent her home with food and she will eat it, we’ve been giving it to both of our cats.
Most internet sources support the twice a day theory.
What have others done? Any experts here?

Thanks

Go with the doctor that is a specialist. They have the most training in dealing with the severe cases. If I have learned anything it is that vets come out of vet school and can go straight into practice. Some give better advice than others. Specialists have to go through internships, residencies and many are board certified. If the vet you saw at the hospital is a specialist rely on their knowledge. Your regular vet would probably support what the hospital suggested. I would check and see if they recommend feeding the prescription food to the other cat. In our case the vet said the food (a different prescription one) was fine for both dogs but that isn’t always the case and I don’t know about cats.

Thanks - we have checked and it’s fine, but expensive, to feed both cats the food. It’s just low carb, high protein. So far we are keeping them on the twice a day diet. I feel bad going against our vet’s advice, especially since I’ve used this vet for multiple dogs and cats for the last 25+ years.

Nutrition is one of the areas in vet med that changes the fastest with new formulations and uses found all the time. Diabetes is another area that the handling of has been changing rapidly. A vet that has been around for 25 years knows a lot! He just may not know the newest recommendations that have come out. They don’t feel bad if you are listening to a specialist vet. Now if you are purely going by what you read on the internet your vet will be pulling their hair out! Good luck with your kitty!
