New to CA, want to eventually transfer to a UC, question about old out of state transcript

Hi guys! Just looking for some quick clarification. I am interested in attending community college here in CA after establishing residency in a year but was just wondering about my how my old out of state CC transcript will impact me.

I have tried asking some friend here but they are all CA natives and only ever attended one CC.

When I was fresh out of high school I attended CC in my home state of Connecticut and did quite poorly. I left after 3 semesters. I had mainly D/F grades. Time has passed and I am a much different person and have matured quite a bit, in classes I have taken recently I get nothing but A’s.

My questions are:

If I retake my D/F classes here in a CA CC will they be forgiven just as they are for other CA CC students? (My CA friend told me about this).

If I manage to get a 4.0 at my CA CC, how will my out of state transcript factor into my new GPA when applying to a UC? Will it completely wreck my chances or will the UC only look at my new GPA while still considering my old transcript? In other words, how is the GPA calculated for transfer purposes with an out of state transcript and new CA CC transcript?

Thank you!

Are you supporting yourself? If not you will not qualify for in state tuition.

Yes, I am supporting myself, I am over the age of 25, and I have almost been in CA for a year (have had a job here, have a CA license, and CA DMV registration dating back almost a year).

The UCs have a stricter rule for establishing residency. Make sure to touch base with them. If they think you’re in CA simply for education, they won’t OK it. I don’t know the ins and outs but it’s tougher than getting CA residency for a CCC, I know that.

Yes, I understand the difficult nature of understanding residency here in CA. But my question was regarding how UCs calculate transfer GPA with an out of state transcript, not whether or not I will qualify for in-state tuition.

You can retake as long as they match and are comparable units (example, Intro to Psych, 3 units each or 3/4 combo).

You can also see if the old CC has academic renewal or grade forgiveness.

Keep in mind some courses might not transfer so are irrelevant. If you can’t retake or get grade forgiveness, the fact that they are old will make the UC not look at those grades so intently.

In terms of which courses match or are transferable, you need to go over it with a CCC advisor or a UC advisor or just kind of guess.
