New to cc!!

Hello, friends. It seems every time I search something college-related, a college confidential thread shows up, so I figure I may as well give this a shot. I'd like to hear what you think my chances are for my reach schools, Stanford, Duke, and Princeton.

GRADES
-GPA: 95.1/100 no weighted classes in my school
-Rank: 18/185
-SAT: math-800, reading-670, writing-710
-SAT II: math 2 and physics (I get these results back in a couple of days. I'm pretty good at figuring out what my scores are going to be for standardized tests. Let's just say I get 800 on math 2 and 720 on physics)
-ACT: composite- 32, math-36, reading-31, English-35, science-27, English/writing-33
-AP: Calc AB- 4, English 11- 3 (my school doesn't offer much in the way of AP)
-College credit: Psych- 4, stats-4, calc I-4, calc II-4, diff. Eq.-4, mech. Physics-4, C++-4, total credit- 28 (all taken at a local college campus)

ACTIVITIES
4 year letterman, soccer and tennis. Soccer captain and all section
Wrestling statistician 2 years
Music stuff. State band junior year, alto sax. Honors, district, region bands. Composition and performance are favorite activities.
Mock trial
Musical cast member

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Maths instructor wrote a good one, music instructor wrote a good one, last one was kinda rushed, so not that great

ESSAYS
I am a decent writer. I tried to make my essays interesting and different. I focused on unique topics. I think they were good.

I would like to major in biomedical engineering and minor in musical composition.

All Reaches

Grades are fine. SAT 2180 is below average though, might slightly hurt chances if you’re a borderline applicant. Impressive college credits.

Activities are fine, but not outstanding. Maximize your potential by deeply analyzing them.

Why Biomedical engineering is lost when viewing the application as a whole. Be sure to mention this in your essays. If your musical compositions are awesome, upload them as supplements.

Good luck!

Thank you for the response! What would you consider to be a match school? My primary match school I have applied to is Case Western.

I’m gonna go ahead and bump this.

Yeahhhh I’m applying to Duke and Yale with virtually the same everything. Let’s just see how it goes hahaha. All for both of us will be nearly impossible. Where besides Case Western have you applied?

A few safety schools. Drexel, Drake, Pitt. All accepted.

I need more match schools if case doesn’t work out!

I mean it’s kinda creepy how similar our stuff is haha.

List: Duke, Vanderbilt, UVa, Indiana at Bloomington (accepted with a large scholarship), Washington and Lee, Richmond, Yale, Boston College, William and Mary, and Virginia Tech

GRADES
-GPA: 94.4/100 no weighted classes in my school
-Rank: unranked/130 (probably 15th)
-SAT: math-740, reading-730, writing-680
-SAT II: Math II 740 and US History 690 (not great but I was too lazy to do it more than once
-ACT (won’t be turning this in): composite- 30, math-34, reading-32, English-32, science-23, English/writing-31
-AP: Calc BC- 5
-College credit (college level classes I’ve taken, we don’t do it the same way): Calc, Physics, Advanced Biology, Economics

ACTIVITIES
4 year golfer at school (captain) and for a local club (won an award for player of the year in golf and academics; also volunteer for the program still)
Algebra Teacher (logged over 280 hours in the 6 week program)
Tutor
IRC/Debate
Model UN (best delegate)
Youth Group leader
Environmental Club
Intern at a State Senator’s office

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Maths instructor wrote a great one, english instructor wrote a good one, last one (US History, written for an application for a full ride back in October) was kinda rushed, so not that great

ESSAYS
They’ve been great so far!

I plan to major in Finance or Economics, Politics, and History (depends on whether I’m attending a liberal arts school or not)

What state are you from?

PA lol

Also, why so pessimistic? We have a shot!

Edit: we’re identical!

We do you’re right! It’s just really tough cause we’re both borderline applicants. It’s going to be extremely nerve-wracking.

What are you looking for in a school? I’d add UVa (although it’s really easy from Virginia for me to get in) at least.

I know. I wouldn’t mind skipping the next couple months of my life, especially if it ends in rejection.

Exactly. I’m thinking I’m going to do ED for Vandy (I’ve met the dean of admissions); however, not sure how likely I am to get into all of these schools.

I would like some more opinions. I know Stanford and Princeton are pretty high reaches, but Duke has a higher acceptance rate. Do I have a legitimate shot at Duke?

@immasenior

Probably a lower reach.

I’m not sure about what match schools would be good. Ask that in the College Search Forum?

I would hope you do haha (otherwise I’m done for). If you want more schools I can provide some pointers. I know a lot about colleges for some strange reason…

Haha I have faith in us! And yeah, I’m pretty much open to pointers as far as college goes. All of my decisions so far have been based off of reading on the internet. I’ve been on one college visit. My family is too busy for me to travel all the places I’d like to see. I just hope I get into one of these four schools.

Well assuming you’re from PA (since all your safeties are from PA), I’d apply to Penn State (it’s a safety too but worth it), William and Mary (a good school in Virginia), UVa, Johns Hopkins, and maybe even University of Michigan (but dang it’s cold there haha).

I think those colleges you listed are reaches, only because your scores are a bit low. Your activities and GPA are good, but I don’t think those would be matches. Try searching “top biomed engineering schools” and pick a few that would be closer to your stats.

I made a new thread for Johns Hopkins as a result of arswan14’s suggestion.

I think it is a better match for me. What do you think?
