Hi I’m a junior who recently decided that I should enter college. I did a little further research and I think I want to major in finance. Is this major hard? Also I’m from New York State and I go to a really inner city really poorly maintained public school so I don’t have a lot of resources. I’m a first generation college student. I want to go somewhere cheap my brother said I should check out the Suny and CUNY system.
I have a 83 gpa which is like a 3.0 I think. And I have a 1130 sat. Does anyone know what schools I should be looking at?
My grades my first year was a 78 second year was a 81 and this year is going to be around a 92. I took 3 years of science taking 4 years of history English math and language with maybe a couple of aps. What schools would I be eligible for?
I have decent ecs. But I don’t want to apply to any private universities because I can’t afford it. So what sunys or CUNY’s would I be in range for? I saw a sheet with ranges and I’m only eligible for like 2 of them my brother says that it doesn’t matter he said I should look into some school called new paltz and Albany. I live near Baruch and hunter. Which I think are CUNY’s. My bro said also to check out a school called Plattsburgh. He knows a lot about admissions he went through the process by himself and got into West Point Cornell Harvard and Princeton. I’m sure not like him lol.
I thought I was going to join the military after high school but then I didn’t qualify do to disability so now I should go to college.
Your “bro” is right. The average GPA for entering freshmen is 3.34
Your constantly improving grades work for you to some degree. An upward grade trend indicates a continuing effort and a trend which indicates your likelihood of persevering with your work in college.
You will need some strong recommendations from some of your teachers.
City is an outstanding opportunity for first generation college!
Your backup should be a good two year college which sends many students to City.
Go for it!! College pays off in more ways than just employment. It can enrich your life!!
Hi @Skatekid36 ! You are on the right path by choosing to research your options now. First think you need to figure out is how much, if anything, you can pay. The answer to that question will drive your choices. Can your parents pay anything toward college? Do you know your household income? How many people are in your household? What year of college is your brother in? Does he get financial aid?
@brantly a reasonable price my parents are willing to pay is up to 13,000 a year. But my brother says I would probably collect excelsior since my dad got severely injured in war and collects disability now. He says he thinks you need your overall household income to be below 120,00 or something like that which I know my family is well below.
@brantly my brother is out of of college he went to west point then the military and got injured also my family has really bad luck. I was going to join the family business but apparently if you have aspergers you can’t join the army or marines. So now it is off to college. Ik I can handle college because when they evaluated me for aspergers I scored a 147 iq when I was 5. I started trying junior year I was just lazy my first two years. But what do you think my chances are at new paltz or Plattsburgh. I googled them they seem like nice schools near mountains which is great I love to hike! But do I have a shot at them? What other schools should I be looking at?
OK, you can definitely afford SUNY if your parents can pay $13k a year. If your income is less than $125k you will qualify for Excelsior. Yes, I think you have a chance at New Paltz and Plattsburgh. Both of them have finance majors. You can use this tool to search SUNY schools by major.
https://www.suny.edu/attend/find-a-suny-program/undergraduate/
@brantly i ran that tool and I got these schools, (remember I’m new to this so my spelling is off). Oswego brockport oneonta, old Westbury, fredotia, Albany genesio Binghamton do you know if I qualify for any of these schools?
After you get the results from that tool, click on the name of each college and it will tell you the median SAT/ACT and GPA. Binghamton would be a stretch. It’s the most selective of all the SUNY campuses. However, they do have a program where you go to Broome County Community College for two years (which is local to Binghamton) and live in Binghamton dorms. Then you transfer into Binghamton your junior year. Geneseo may also be a stretch. Old Westbury is more of a commuter college.
What you need to do is go to the website of each of these colleges and look around. Find the admissions requirements, course requirements, and majors. Read about campus life and the surrounding areas.
Do you need support for your Asperger’s? If so, that should be another factor to consider.
@brantly my brother told me to look at something called a common data set it looks like I’m in range for Plattsburgh brockport Oswego fredonia and Albany. He also told me about broome and some cc called tc3. My aspergers is barely noticeable nobody in my school except my gcs know I have it. So I’m fine there.
@brantly my brother said my best bet is to go to a 2 year than transfer to Binghamton. Is it hard to do that?
That’s great! On all counts.
TC3 is Tompkins Cortland Community College. It’s near Cornell. It’s one of the few community colleges that has on-campus housing. It’s in a beautiful area.
This is what you need to do:
Go to the website for each SUNY college you are considering. Read them thoroughly.
On April 30 they are holding an online info session about all the SUNY schools. You should sign up. https://engage.suny.edu/portal/which_suny_virtual
After you read the websites and attend this virtual program, come back and ask more questions.
Also, here’s where you sign up for virtual info sessions for each specific college.
https://engage.suny.edu/register/info_sessions
Get busy with this!
Also, it’s great that you have your brother to advise you.
Anyone else have any input?
