New to forum and questions about Emory

Hello,

I have been on College Confidential off and on for a couple of years but haven’t posted until now. My DD is thinking of applying to Emory for fall 2019. We had a great visit there Friday. My concern is getting the $ together, of course. For those of you who have gone through this with Emory in the past, how would you say the school stacks up to other schools in the financial aid and merit scholarship areas? Thanks for any info.

@Karissavow wonderful–it’s a great school! Please consider also asking in the Emory forum.

Hi @Karissavow - I just saw your post and wanted to respond even though I’m very late!

My D will be starting at Oxford College of Emory in the fall and we were also seeking merit, so I can at least tell you our experience. My D fell in love with Emory at a visit when she was a sophomore and we immediately thought, “Oh No” because the price tag was so high. She applied to lots of schools looking for merit and had some success getting scholarship offers that covered about 1/2 the cost. She applied to both Emory and Oxford at Emory and also applied for Emory Scholars and Oxford Scholars. She didn’t get invited to the interview weekends for either of those - which wasn’t surprising because they are so competitive - but was awarded early admission to Oxford (she’d applied RD to both). We mentally wrote Emory off at that point as being economically unfeasible.

Then in February, she got an email telling her that she’d been offered a Liberal Arts Scholarship for $20k/yr to attend Oxford College/Emory. She is also a Georgia resident and a NMF, so she was able to get small scholarships offered by Emory for both of those which, when coupled with the liberal arts scholarship, made Oxford economically feasible. It ended up being one of her larger total scholarship offers, though not the largest. Also, she was eventually accepted to main campus Emory RD and the financial aid package offered by Emory was a little bit more generous than many others had been. Not as generous as some, but more so than many.

So, long story short, I have no idea what they’re looking for when it comes to these scholarships, but if your daughter is a strong candidate, but is concerned she’s not quite strong enough to get one of the few big Emory Scholar or Oxford Scholar awards, there are some other smaller scholarships she might get. And, in our experience, the financial aid was at least on par with other schools my D applied to.

We realized through this process that, as difficult as admission decisions are to predict, merit scholarships are even more difficult to predict. If your D loves Emory, give it a try and hope for the best - just make sure she knows your budget limit and doesn’t let Emory become her “one dream school”. You absolutely never know what might happen. Good luck to her!

I just found your comments. Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to help us.
