New to Macs, Which would be best for freshman in science major?

I'm about to start college in the fall and i was having quite a bit of trouble deciding on which of the new macbooks to purchase as my school computer for as long as I'm in college(hopefully). I've decided on the 13' macbook but i'm not sure whether i should get the white macbook or shell out the extra cash for a probably more durable and possibly better equipped macbook pro. I don't have a problem with the design or basic specs of either of them (would like to know which would be a faster basic system though).
I have only a few requirements but durability and battery life, since it will be a class computer, are top of the heap. I'm really concerned though about the possibility in cracks and discoloration in the white macbook. I know it sounds a little dumb, but i really dont wanna have to look at a bunch of cracks in my computer for 4 years. I like both computers from what i've read, its just hard to make a definite decision. I can afford either laptop, i'd just like to hear, from those with experience, which is better for me.
Thanks Alot

I have the White MacBook, and it cracks and discolours way too easily. Apple, thankfully, has acknowledged this problem, and they replace my cover every time I take it to an Apple store (every 4-6 months - I have AppleCare).

My model is from 2006, so perhaps they have changed the kind of plastic they’re using now? The new ones at the Apple store feel different, but that might just be all in my head.

What you get for the additional $150…

-Updated screen
-Unibody aluminum case
-Firewire 800
-SD slot
-Backlit keyboard
-DDR3 RAM
-Upgraded [non-removable] battery with much longer life (both per charge, and number of cycles)
-.13ghz faster processor
-Capability of handling 8gb of RAM

For your two specifications (durability and battery), I’d without a doubt go for the base 13" MacBook Pro. It is much more durable, stable, “solid”, etc. The battery also blows the MacBook’s out of the water. I’ve consistently been achieving over 7 hours on my 13" MacBook Pro. The battery isn’t removable, but honestly, I’ve never met a college student who actually carried a spare around. (Though I’d imagine if they did, they probably had a short battery life to begin with, which isn’t the case here)

With the MacBook, it’s a known issue that the case cracks, and Apple acknowledges this. Given you didn’t cause the damage, they’ll usually replace the case for you. (And by that, I mean if the bezel is cracking right where the magnets are, it’s obviously a fault. If the corner of your laptop is shattered, you probably dropped it. Warranty may play a part, so be sure to invest in AppleCare within a year of purchase!)

yeah my first choice was the white mb, but im a stickler for durability. I’d like to save the money but it seems like its not only more durable, but also a better system.
