I am a new transfer student at Rutgers NB from a CC and these "Recitations" are new to me. When I was registering for classes there were just two days in bold lettering and I thought those classes are what you had to attend. But now to my surprise there is another date that is in lighter lettering and this is a "recitation". I thought recitations were optional to go to and I never thought you had to do to them unless you need extra help in a smaller class setting.

I have Calc 2 and Intro to Computer Science. They both state in the syllabus that you will do assignments in the recitations and that the attendance at the recitation is 10% of your grade.

Can someone PLEASE tell me if these recitations are necessary at all? I can do well just reading the textbook and understanding the material. I just do not understand the point of the recitations , and now I have to go to each of these classes 3 times a week.

Also, do they really penalize your for attendance? What if you are doing good on HW , tests, etc. Why would they have the heart to still penalize you for attendance?
