Hey guys. Hopefully some of you can help me out with this. If I minor in English, can that help me become a writer or would I definitely need to have English as my major? Also, what are the main differences between an English major and minor? Would I be missing out on a lot?

-Thank you.

Well… I think writers come from all backgrounds and majors, so I don’t think it would be essential for you to major in English.

A minor in english would be plenty.

Thank you guys. What would be the main difference between an English major and a minor?

Some reading on becoming a writer:

On Writing, by Stephen King
The Opposite of Fate, by Amy Tan
Past Perfect, Present Tense, by Richard Peck

Thank you very much happymom. I’ll definitely read those.

An English “major” just takes more classes in English…and depending on the school, would usually be required to take classes covering a few required periods and genres (like one poetry class, on Shakespeare class, one criticism class, one 18th Century class, etc…).

Some schools don’t have formal "minors’’ so you just take 6 or so classes in it and call it a minor…while others will have formal requirements for a minor.

Thank you for clarifying that for me Schmaltz.
