FTR, the one thing about the US that bites are the crappy sports. I mean baseball and ‘football’ cant compete with cricket and soccer, can they? :D

They certainly can’t! “Football”…haha…there is only one football and that is the regular one not the one where you catch the ball with your hands and run towards goalpost…lol.

From your perspective though, personally I would prefer to be shot than to watch a cricket or baseball game since both are boring

Football are in the same group too- repetitive and sometimes boring. Could be entertaining depending on a lot of things

Baseball may be boring, dont insult cricket. :D

I’m coming there for next 4 years. I heard that downloading movies, softwares, serial keys, etc from torrent sites is illegal and we may be caught and charged/imprisoned?? is that really true??

Land of the free, eh?

Same here Dude. I hate that fact. I don’t recall clearly but the last I heard about it (2~3 years back), the situation was like this …

Your ISP will issue you a warning and if you do it again the second time, your connection will be knocked out. And then I think there are some copyright charges by the concerned owner. ‘Imprisonment’ is taking it to the extreme (if you do that stuff repeatedly or you upload such movies)

But then again, from where will you download this stuff?

Piratebay - Not hosted in US - Website not available.
Kickass - A cleaner version is hosted which contains no copyright material. In other words, the site is useless.
Isohunt - Same as kickass.

And similar cases with a dozen or so torrent-related websites. They (MPAA) tightly regulate these websites for such stuff.

EDIT: I really don’t know what’s the situation now, better you google it up :)

this site is the one that i used most to download all sort of things. Its really bad that it isnt hosted in the US. Looking at the massive contents this site hosts, i had assumed that it was being hosted from the US. i guess, i need to download everything here in my homeland before I arrive there.
:p

Yes, it’s illegal and you can get a hefty fine for it. That being said, just stay clear of torrents and other p2p sites and you are probably fine.

Piratebay is hosted from Europe. They have their servers at Switzerland, Sweden and some other “unknown” locations too.

Ya’ll stupid. Use btjunkie.

Military. Military. Military.
Why are you so hell-bent on praising your military? This thread was about how international students felt about life in US. Did someone-anyone say the opposite abt military? Did anyone even mention this topic on the thread? (I have not checked, but I’m taking a chance anyway )

clearly you did not read this entire thread where the U S military veterans were referred to as murderers … i stand by my statement…thread #35

Yuppers! btjunkie is the solution… :p

Dont forget piratebay.

To all of the international students talking about Americans being “fake nice,” it’s called the “comedy of manners.” the comedy of manners is a complex where people are polite, even if they don’t feel that way on the inside, because it’s respectful.

Example-
Person A- “how was your weekend?”
Person B- “it was fine, how was yours?”

Even if Person B doesn’t care about Person A’s weekend, we’re taught to be polite and still ask.

Another example-
You and a group of friends are going out to eat. You know your roommate has a lot of studying to do so they wouldn’t come, but you ask anyway, knowing they’ll say no.

If you’d like to know more, you can Google “comedy of manners” and try looking up a short story called “The Waltz”. In this story, the text written in italics is what the woman says out loud to the man (she’s being polite) but the regular text shows what she REALLY feels. For example, he asks her to dance and even though she doesn’t want to, she says yes anyway because it is polite. She could say no, but we’re taught to keep the other person’s feelings in mind.

Hope this helps.

In latin, that is called “frontin’”. :D

Damn, I learnt a lot from Americans.

Or, you can ask someone to download the movie in your home country and then transfer it to you via rapidshare or something !!

^^

It’s not just an American thing, it’s also a South African thing. We don’t care but its polite to ask and pretend to be interested

I only ask if I genuinely care. So about 10 people qualify.

boramk- i didn’t know that, i couldn’t speak for other countries because i’m american
UKdude84- many people are like that here, but that’s not what they’re “supposed” to do
