new to this, chance me?

So I've never really done this stuff before and I kind of lack a lot of confidence with the schools I'm applying to, but...here I go. chance me!

Asian/White Male (half-Chinese, quarter-Japanese, quarter-white) in Washington, currently a senior

Schools I am applying to:
University of Washington
University of Chicago
Northwestern University
USC
Princeton
Stanford (last two in particular I believe are reaches...)

UW GPA: 3.97 cumulative through junior year
UW Class Rank: 23/410
Weighted Class Rank: 17/410
APs: AP English Language (4), AP US History (5), AP Lit (currently enrolled), AP Physics C: Mech (currently enrolled), AP Calc BC (currently enrolled), AP Psychology (not in an AP class but taking regardless), AP Japanese (also not in a class, but self study with help from teacher)

Self study includes some Japanese and Calculus.

SAT I: 2040 (780 M, 640 CR, 620 W)
SAT II: US History (720) - Is it worth it to try and take the SAT II for Japanese and perhaps Math 2?

Letter of Recommendations: AP English teacher (develop from really really bad writing to some fantastic writing while dealing with many personal problems) and Precalc teacher (who recommended me to skip into AP Calc BC)

Clubs:
3 years in National Honor Society
3 years in the Junior State of America (debate), regional and chapter positions held

Sports:
4 years of HS Tennis (all four years on JV, but JV Captain in senior year)

Others:
Spend time doing some photography, both film and digital
Job as a tutor for a freshman, few hours a week

thank you for your time!

First, Welcome to CC.

Let me give you the usual disclaimers. None of us are professionals or admissions counselors. We don’t know what goes on in admissions committees. You probably have the same access to statistics as we do. Advice here should not be viewed as a substitute for what your guidance counselor tells you.

While we will try to give you honest opinions, as alway free advice (including mine) is worth what you pay for it.

Now having said that.

U of Chicago, Northwestern, Princeton and Stanford are all extremely selective, with acceptance rates below 20% Princeton and probably Stanford are below 10%. Many more highly qualified students apply to these schools than can be accepted. Almost no matter what your statistics, you cannot count on getting into any of these schools.

Looking at your statistics – Your grades and class rank are probably fine. Your course rigor looks fine.

For the the schools listed above – Your SAT math is obviously fine, but your CR & W are somewhat lower than the profile for accepted students. This is the biggest concern with your record. (Objectively, not bad scores, probably close to 90th percentile nationwide, just lower than what these schools normally admit).

I don’t know whether you’ve listed all of your ECs – You list two of note – Tennis and Debate, with some leadership in each. This is ok, though not overwhelming.

Teacher Recs – I’ll be honest, almost everyone says they have excellent Teacher Recs and that they’ve written excellent essays. I have no reason to doubt you, but no way to evaluate this (and it’s a part of the problem with chance me threads).

Based on last year’s acceptance/rejection reports, for, Princeton and Stanford – my guess would be long shot, . Northwestern and Chicago are also probably reaches. We do see reports of some students with similar statistics getting in, but not many.

USC – I can’t help, I have no real feel for this school. Washington – I’m not 100% sure whether you mean the state school in Wash State or the Private school in St Louis. I think you have a really good shot at the State School. If the private one – admissions chances are roughly the same as for Northwestern and Chicago.

Bottom Line – I don’t want to be overnegative. You have excellent credentials, with only one real weak point (SAT CR/W). Even those scores pretty good, just not for the schools you listed. I wouldn’t say that you shouldn’t apply to any one of them (or even all of them), but I don’t think you can count on an admission to this group. I would recommend that you have a few back ups.

How is his weak point is SAT? They’ll get him into college. ECs need a little work.

640 CR will clearly get someone int a GREAT school. As I said, it’s in the 90th percentile.

My point was that it is light for Princeton,Stamford and probably Chicago, Northwestern.

It’s weak in comparison to his grades.
