New Top 10 Rankings for Florida State...

Florida State University faculty in five separate academic disciplines have been ranked in the nation's Top 10 for scholarly output, according to a new annual index of graduate programs throughout the United States that is reported in the Jan. 12 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education.

"What I find most impressive about this is the list of universities we were ranked with," said FSU President T.K. Wetherell. "It is nice to see an objective recognition that Florida State University is a force on the academic scene."

The Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index, partly financed by the State University of New York at Stony Brook and produced by Academic Analytics, a for-profit company, rates faculty members' scholarly productivity at nearly 7,300 doctoral programs in 304 academic institutions around the United States. The rankings are based on objective assessments of faculty productivity, including faculty publication counts, citations of publications, federal grant dollars awarded, and honors and awards. They do not consider reputation, but focus solely on the assessment of faculty productivity.

The most recent index, based on data from 2005, contained good news for FSU doctoral faculty in five academic areas. They are:

* Social work, ranked No. 4 in the nation
* Spanish, also ranked No. 4
* Marketing, ranked No. 5
* Oceanography, ranked No. 8
* Atmospheric sciences, ranked No. 10
