new tuition rates

for 2009-2010
they have raised their overload tuition from $750 to $3075 for every 1/3 credit.....
that is huge......
now what does that mean?
financial problems ? too many students are overloading classes?....
i'm a little disappointed here

Yes what does that mean to enrolled students?
Dingbei, where did you see that?

the website~~
WPI Accounting and Treasury Office - Tuition & Fees: 2009-2010

Remember that a "full load" for a term is 3 classes, each at 1/3 unit per class. So in a semester you have 2 terms. That's 6 classes total for the (gulp) $18,450 for tuition per semester. If you divide that by 6 to figure out how much each 1/3 unit or 1 class is, you get the $3075 for the "overload" of 1/3 unit or 1 class.

What it looks like is that they used to give you a break on adding additional classes. Actually, I'm kind of surprised they had that option as 3 classes is enough to take in over one term. Now if you want to add an extra class, it costs just as much as the initial classes.

OK so this is above and beyond what they consider a normal course load right? Is that what overload means? Is this school on a semster or trimester or quarter system? I guess I need to go look at the website again - sigh - I thought I had the costs figured out on this one.

Is taking an extra PE class considered overloading?

fireflyscout, i'm wondering the same thing~
this new rate does aggravate many current students at WPI.....
overload discount used to be one of the big advantages they have there.....

theory -- WPI has 4 terms. The normal load is 3 courses/term.

I don't think there was an additional charge for PE classes. They are definitely not an overload. They are 1/12 unit and you are required to take 4 of them, or the equivalent, during your time there to graduate. They may try to charge you if you take more than one during a term though...

I can see where it would be a huge benefit to add that 4th course at a discount rate, I'm just kind of surprised that they would give that sort of incentive to "overload". 3 courses in 7 weeks, with all the other stuff that you do at college, is plenty to concentrate on. If you get sick for a week while taking 4 courses I have no clue how you'd ever catch up.

Interesting thread. Please post if you have additional info.

12 classes a year seems like a ton. But I can see a time one might want to take 4 in a term, perhpas to make up some required credits later in the college career. I guess this would be incentive to plan well

PE classes is not an overload, at least the way they do it now.

And yes, the overloading thing ****es me off quite greatly. What I might end up doing is taking community college classes over the summer to boost my Law School applicable GPA.

I'm probably in the minority here, but all schools are faced with declining investments and endowments. All schools are trying to deal with less income than during the previous "good times." All WPI has done is align the cost of overload courses with that of regular load courses. Sound fair to me. Why should overload courses cost less?

most of my friends there were planning to do double major within four years and now they have to change their original plan~~

I wonder if they'll actually make money off of the increased overload charges. It's likely that people will just stop overloading unless they're seniors and they need a few extra classes to graduate. It might be that they're trying to cut down class sizes, which is needed. Some of the classes were getting quite large. (Note to prospective students: most WPI classes are 20-30 students, some early lectures are much larger, a few advanced classes are smaller).

You are allowed 2 and 1/6 units per semester. So if you take 3 and 3 classes then you can take 1/6 credit extra. This is equivalent to 2 PE classes, or 1/2 of a regular class. As it was this year and the last two, you would be charged ~350 for your first overload and 750 for each additional one. Someone told my friend that you can take as many PE classes as you want but I am not sure on this.
A possible reason is my friend said there is a lot of Chineses students who finish school in two years. I do not know if this is the reason or they want less work on their faculty or what. A lot of students are p/o because they pulled this in D term and we sign up for classes April 1,2,3. As far as I know, SGA did not even have any advanced warning of this.

If this happens, I believe many people who would overload will switch to taking Grad classes for the same price.

ohh good news~ they got this changed… there’s a letter from WPI offiial in that facebook protest group…
