New UVA Office of Admission website

Hi all,

Just thought I'd give you a heads up. We launched a new Office of Admission website this morning. Much of the basic content remains the same; we just reorganized and updated some things.

I'd like to know what you think about the design and navigation, especially if you are familiar with the old site.

I'm looking forward to sharing your comments with my colleagues!

~Dean J

I just checked out the site. When I selected certain options nothing happened. I just tried to "Meet a student". I also tried to enter the Apply Now section and selected "couselor", plus I clicked on Access UVA. All 3 times, nothing happened.

The links to the schools work though.

Great! thanks

It's pretty good.
Everything works and it looks a lot cleaner

It would of been nice if "meet a student" had more then just 1 student.
ie: Make a database, and whenever the link is clicked, it randomly pick a number that corrsespond with a number in the database

Ooh, this new site is MUCH better than the old one. I was so frustrated by the old one that I almost didn't apply. Haha. It's a lot easier to find information and I like the personalized pages for each type of student.

I don't know about other applicants, but I personally used how the college's website was like as a guage for how good the college was. Considering how most use the internet these days, I wouldn't think favorably of a college that had a shoddy site. That was almost the undergrad admission office back then, this is really, really so much better.

Yes, thank you. The new website is much better. I remember trying to find things on the old one and it was all so muddled...

This one is much more clean-cut and speaks a lot better about the University because, as melli said, a website is like a glimpse into the U and the worse the website, the less enthusiasm from possible candidates.

Although it didn't stop me from applying.... ^_^

The new website looks excellent. I think it's a lot more organized, easier to locate information and navigate. The fresh design looks great and it appears all the links are working fine now. Thanks, Dean J!

Hm. What browser are you using? I'm looking at it in Firefox, my LSP checked it in Opera and others in the office use IE, so I thought we troubleshooted that. Do you have the most recent version of Flash (8 or 9)? That might be the problem.

The "Meet a Student" rotates, so you should see different students on there. I'm not sure if this is schedule based (changes each day/week) or click based (but I don't think we're using cookies).

We testing the site in production mode, but there are always tweaks that need to be done here and there. If you see something that doesn't work, just mention it and we'll look into it.

Dean J

I am a little confused and wondered if you could check something for me. Can you confirm that the data presented on the website is for the students that were just accepted and will start in less than a month?

The data says it is for the entering class of 2006 and that there will be 3097 students. However, somewhere in my personal notes compiled over the last six months, I have the number of students enrolling in Fall, 2005 also as 3097. Is this just a coincidence or is some of the data not yet fully updated?

In addition to the above, can you provide any more detail on entering students, eg,
1. Avg SAT (and breakdown) for in-state and avg SAT for out of state
2. Relative admission data for in-state and out-of-state students (acceptance rate, yield, etc.)
3. Number of students (again in-state and out-of-state) that applied ED and the acceptance rate and their relative SAT statistics (don't know if you publish this or not).

Also, I wanted to second the many positive comments posted so far. The site looks much improved and is easier to read and view.

"Study with the best scholars at Thomas Jefferson's academical village"

--What does that even mean? That part should be changed.

Dean J, the admissions office should aim to be as transparent as possible. I feel that you almost have a responsibility to post as much raw data as possible on the admissions website. Maybe you could at least provide a link to the OIA data digest?

The Office of Institutional Assessment conducts a census each August, which will give us the official numbers for the new class. There's some "melt" each summer and there's a certain point when that office considers the numbers to be stable enough to run statistics.

Cav, there's a link to the data digest on the "Related Links" page.

Will that cheezy caption/picture get changed ;) ?

Dean J,

I just checked the site again just now, and I can access everything.

Looks good! I like the pictures in the "Take a Look at UVa" section. UVa sites tend to focus on pics of the Lawn. It's good to show other pics of the University.

Also, re. the "Admission Information" page, I think Thomas Jefferson founded UVA in 1819, not 1820.

cav: That sentence makes perfect sense to me, what confuses you about it?

^^I don't think he's confused, he just thinks it sounds stupid. I for one have always thought "academical village" sounds dumb.

The site looks excellent, as do the essay questions. I think I'll get started now.

does anyone know when the online application is available?

August 15 (10char)

wahoo: Hmm, that's true. Academical village is just.. bland to me, I've never really paid attention to it. It'd be nice to stop having TJ shoved down our throats though. =) You can be sure any introductory brochure, presentation, etc. mentions TJ at least three times. Ho hum.

I don't think the method for detecting the current version of flash works with Linux computers. I have the updated version of flash yet the site is claiming that I need to upgrade my version so I reinstalled Flash but I'm sitll getting the "please upgrade" message. Can anybody else with a Linux operating system confirm this for me so I can make sure it's not a system issue?
