New versus old GRE

Has anyone found anything comparing the two other than what little is on the ETS web site?

My son has to decide between taking the test in September versus waiting for the new one. He doesn't like the added length of the new, but is intrigued by what is said about vocabulary not being that important, given this is what hurts his verbal reasoning score. He's an EE major, so I'm not sure how important the verbal score will be to begin with.

All the test prep stuff is geared towards the old one, and it'll take awhile before they can get polished materials for the new one, so keep that in mind. The added length is an issue, though - you're dealing with test exhaustion and that can hurt your score, too.

(This may be stupid, but it's what I really think.)

I feel like the old GRE is more amenable to raising your score if you really put your nose to the grindstone and study. The elimination of all the memorization-type questions on the new GRE makes me feel like it will test native ability rather than preparation -- of course, whether that's good or bad depends on your point of view.

yeah i go with molliebatmit. I think taking the old GRE is better if you want to raise your scores.

I like the old one. Any excuse to memorize 3500 words is great!

when will they start using the new GREs?

Hey, sleepybunny, thanks for asking. Now that I've researched I see that ETS has pushed back the launch date by a full year! I had been relying on what someone had told me here on CC about the new test coming this October. That was the original date.

I guess one should always double check the information you get on CC. Even from me :)

I have checked it from ETS. The new GRE will come into effect from fall 2007.

makes ME happy!!! The idea of a 4 1/2 hours test... I'll never survive! I'm looking to apply for grad school for Fall 08 so it's perfect. Catch is... got to take the first one in the spring in case I don't like my scores. eep.
