new vs old: not the typical answer!

on the whole new vs old, many say that old are more social, new are dead. ive heard a lot about the thin walls in the dorms vs the communal bathrooms in the old dorms. some say that the communal bathrooms make the social atmosphere-- everyone must be outside their rooms. ive also heard that it depends on what floor you're on-- some in new dorms claim the drinking and partying never ends.
now lets hear something new-- any current students have imput? preferably a ccurent frosh, being that they're the ones who have delt with comparable numbers of new vs old dorms in relation to what 2009 will deal with.
also, what were the roomate request forms like? if you have already been at washu do you think they matched your preferences well? or maybe they matched your preferences but your roomate still turned out to be a bad fit for you...

i'd like to know about the res halls freshmen can end up in.
i stayed in umrath when i visited (an old dorm) it was sub free, i dont know if that changes the feel of the floor or not, but every door was open... though if you ask me it doesn't make much of a difference since the hall is "riot proof" meaning its not straight. you cant see whos on the floor unless they're right outside your door

I'm not a student at WashU. However, I took a tour there last month, and had five (5) tour guides.

Every one of them strongly recommended the old dorms in favor of the new ones. They cited the same reasons that you did-- the old dorms are more social because of the layout (doubles, no suites) and the shared bathrooms. They disagreed with the university's mission to rebuild all the dorms.

One of the five tour guides said he requested a new dorm but was placed in an old dorm. He said he couldn't be luckier.

I think it depends on the person. If socializing is important to you, then by all means ask for an old dorm. But remember the new dorms are really nice (clean) and you can be social anywhere, regardless of whether your dorm is new or old.
