New Works, Contemporary or Classics

If this has already been discussed please direct me to the thread I may have missed it! In talking to my D and after visiting a school last week it came up that my D would like to go to a school that does more New Works and Contemporary with some Classics. I know I read that Webster is more along the lines of the Classics with very little Contemporary, but if anyone has looked at this do most of the schools do a mix? Which schools have you noticed that do New Works and Contemporary Shows?

At the auditions in early 2011, the Pace director said they focus on more modern productions.

Most schools my daughter investigated tried to have a balanced offering of shows. But I do remember Pace as being strongly inclined to contemporary works. My understanding is the voice training there supports that contemporary leaning.

Some schools, bless them, have a list of shows on their websites they’ve done their entire history. I wish they’d all do that.

Some schools seem to be changing how they choose shows, though, so it’s a good question to ask.

Northwestern University hosts the American Music Theatre Project which focuses on creating new works, plus they create Waa-Mu every year, an entirely student-written musical that is highly produced.

This is all in addition to a staff that has earned several recent Tony’s for new works they have created.

NYU/Tisch produces new works. Some examples…when my D played a lead in a mainstage musical junior year, it was the premiere of a new musical that was written by graduates of NYU’s Graduate Program in Musical Theater Writing. Various studios at Tisch also put on new works. In addition, when my D was in ETW studio at Tisch, she got to create a new work as a collaborative workshop with Moises Kaufman. Also, seniors in ETW can do what are called Independent Projects and create new works and my D wrote a musical that was put on and has gone onto professional productions since then. Also, while at Tisch, my D got to be in new musical workshops for the Grad Program in MT Writing. My D has been out of college for almost three years, but next year, Tisch has chosen to put on a musical my D wrote as one of their mainstage musicals in fact. Lots of new works going on at Tisch and it was one neat thing my kid experienced while there.

@soozietvt - “My D has been out of college for almost three years, but next year, Tisch has chosen to put on a musical my D wrote as one of their mainstage musicals in fact.” – this is so cool – CONGRATULATIONS to your amazing D!!

Thanks, she is very excited about that. It is nice to see her first musical have a continued life and it is cool that a mainstage musical at NYU is written by an alum (who is not much older than the students themselves). I am not sure this is public yet, but it is definitely happening next spring.

soozievt - Congrats to your talented D for getting to have her musical as part of next years mainstage productions. Please let me know what it is so I can pass the info on to my D and she can go see it!

Susan, I heard that great news about her musical being done at Tisch and was going to email you to say congrats as I didn’t want to post it here in case it was too soon. It’s funny, I heard it from a friend who is in JCS at the moment. He’s a friend of Michael, who is at Tisch and I’m sure your D knows him, we’ve talked about this before. He and Michael did Rent together for years in the city. I thought it was a funny coincidence because I was telling Jeremy how I saw her in JCS all those years ago at Tisch. Such a talent she is! I’m very happy for her. I was in the city for a whirlwind day and a half because my D was there discussing a workshop of a play she wrote last year, which may go ahead next spring. She had originally planned to fly home for a few days but had to get back to London for a project she’s now working on there so I flew down so I could see her and JCS in one trip! Pass along our best to her, please!

Thanks, AlwaysAMom. I mentioned D’s musical being selected for the production season next year at NYU in passing when thinking of examples of new works my D experienced while at Tisch and now beyond. Not sure if it is too soon to mention and maybe I should not have (I’ve known for some time already).

It is funny that you heard it from the actor in JCS. I know who you mean but I really don’t think my D personally knows him (but I guess ya never know as I don’t know everyone she knows!! LOL…I am blown away how she has over 2000 FB friends, ha ha). I would not have expected that actor to know of my D. But yes, she surely knows Michael (on faculty at Tisch/NSB) since she worked with him in his classes last year and musically directed one of the Tisch shows last year under him.

It is weird that of all the performances my D has ever been in, the one you saw was JCS at Tisch, which I would say is the least she has done in almost any show in the past 10 years. It wasn’t the best show either. Hopefully one day you will see her in something else, and of course I hope to meet you one day if our paths cross in the big city at the same time. Hope you enjoyed JCS on Broadway. I think Josh Young has a fabulous voice. It just is not a musical that I have ever really liked that much. The next Broadway show I’m gonna see is Newsies in about a month when I go to the city to see D in three different shows.

Very exciting about your D’s play and I hope it is workshopped in NYC. I’d love to catch up on what’s happening for her lately. Same on my end (I don’t post much of my D’s news on this site now that she is out of college and also don’t want to get too specific). So, gotta catch up via email soon.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled thread. :D

Just gotta jump in and say we are seeing “Newsies” on the 11th when we go visit Pace! We are SO excited to see it!
