Do colleges look at New York State Regents Exams and do the use them as a factor in admission? How important are they?

I know that when we went to look at SUNY Binghamton with my son they did say that they looked at regents scores, probably more so at the SUNY schools because the whole state system is tied in with the Regents system. I don't think NY schools out of the NY system give it much measure, and I would doubt out of state schools care much at all.

Some schools do look at the regents scores because they are a statewide exam and they help to confirm some of the grades given in certain courses Since there are regional adcoms at most schools, the adcom that covers NYC/NYS is probably well versed in regents exams since they are a requirement for graduation. I know that in the past few years the Math, physics and chem regents have caused havoc with many of the h.s. students who took them that year. In that event most of the colleges (via guidance counselors ) were made aware of the problems.

The regents are a joke. Its that simple.

Don't think they play much role outside of NewYork state.

The regents certainly are a joke. There is a scholarship, however, that my school signs up for (and most likely other high schools in new york) that gives money to the top nine highest cumulative regents scores in the class. The scholarship is given at every school in new york, public or private, so I think that there must be some attachment. But yeah... the regents are utterly useless, otherwise.

so only suny schools basically look at them? I'm applying to a private school in ny state (fordham) and I didn't do so well on one of the math regents. . they prob. wouldn't count it against me?

Now I'm kind of nervous because the admissions officers nkow their region.

The phsyics regents was ridiculous when I took it (I think 80%+ failed) and I got a 95 in the class and an 80~ on the regents. I think the state discounted it but I"m not sure and it remains on my transcript, will the college think that my class was just easy and that I didn't know the material? or is it more likely that htey know the physics regents was screwed up?

Also on my Italian regents I got like a 98 in the class and somehow I got an 80 on the actual test (I think there must have been a bubbling error or something). Does that look really bad too?

That's what I was thinking about. Last year in Biology I got a 99 in the class, but only an 88 on the regents. I wonder how it will look to admission officers. Well, I guess regents don't count that much toward private universities.

Karido, how could there be a bubbling problem? You write in the answers, not bubble them.

Oh, I think i'm thinking of a Italian final, not the regents (I had both a final and a regents)...but yeah I'm not sure what the problem was

I don't know about other schools, but the NYS regents counts as a fifth quarter (I know, doesn't make sense) in my school, so they're pretty important. Fortunately, they're pretty easy so its a plus for us (yay for rhyming).

lol chaoticcranium.
and the regents are ridiculously easy. i took 4 already- earth sci, bio, math a and math b with scores from 92-100 without much prep on my own. u basically need to take the class and have a decent teacher. math i can see how it would be hard if you r not so bright in math (well duh)... but i heard that NYS is doing something stupid like making the courses longer, with less material?? okaaay
