No discounts. However, I do remember the MTA giving NJ college students free metro passes for a week or so...it happened sometime during the fall.

A weekly unlimited metrocard is more expensive than a monthly metro card in the long run. It is only worth it if you are using it everyday both going and coming and perhaps transfering from bus to subway more than once. With a regular ride you can transfer once from subway to bus or vice versa after that if you transfer more you will have to pay another fare, with the unlimited you can make as many transfers as you want and ride without a limit for the period of time of the card monthly, weekly or a day (fun pass). If you will be exploring , perhaps it will be good to get it.

As far as discounts on regular metro cards as mentioned above I think they do have something...check it out ...

I am not sure if it is only for commuter students (living off campus)

Small note about the weekly, monthly and unlimited cards. If you use your card and get off at a stop too soon and it hasn't been (I think it was ten minutes) enough time since you "swipped" your card at the turnstyle. You can not use the card again untill enough time has passed. They do this to prevent you letting more then one person in at a time with a unlimited card.

in case you haven't realized: You won't really use a metro card that much if you live on campus or close to it. On a typical day you will walk everywhere. On weekends if you decide to go to museums, plays, Broadway shows etc. So an unlimited might not be worth it.
