Hello.

I was wondering what were the disadvantages and advantages of applying to Steinhardt (specifically, Media and Communication) or to just apply undecided to College of Arts and Sciences.

NYU is my number one school, and I wouldn't want my chances of being accepted to be lower because of selecting a certain school. I've read a lot about people saying that students who get accepted to Stein. have lower scores, but make up for it with their portfolios. Since I wouldn't be submitting anything of that nature, I'm not exactly sure how that would affect me.

Again, thanks :)

I kind of don’t understand this question- why would you apply to a school you don’t want to go to just to get in to NYU? People (like me) who apply to MCC, do it because they actually want to learn media.

If you LIKE MEDIA and do Steinhardt right off the bat, you’re not stuck in CAS for a year while you wait out the required time.

However, if you don’t like media/cultural studies/marketing/public relations, you won’t like MCC, because that’s pretty much all we do.

Undecided at CAS means you do Orientation at CAS and can declare majors more easily in CAS. If you realize you want to do media, you would have to apply for transfer to Steinhardt.

Everyone takes liberal arts courses in CAS, that never changes.

Don’t get me wrong, I DO want to study media and communications. But I also have an interest in English and a few other majors at CAS. I simply wanted to know if my chances of attending NYU would be different if I applied to steinhardt rather than to CAS undecided.

Oh. Whoops. Long night. . . reading comprehension fail.

Your chances of getting into Steinhardt are SLIGHTLY higher, HOWEVER, in lieu of a portfolio, the department looks at your essays much more closely. They’re more about fit, if you will.

It’s okay, I know exactly what it feels like.

That’s good, because I believe that my essays are pretty good. I just wanted to clarify because I’ve been reading a lot of threads but all everyone says is that it is easier because of portfolios.

Here’s hoping I get in.

I’m sure your are sincere in that you are not sure, but you would benefit from a little more homework. Steinhardt is a PROFESSIONAL school; it’s about getting people trained for a carreer. That’s a shared characteristic, but everything else is pretty program-specific. Portfolios have to do with Streinhardt Art and Music, but not other Steinhardt undergrad programs (Teaching, Speech Therapy, Nutrition, etc…)Like the others, MCC’s program is carrer based; CAS is a liberal arts college. Sure, you can start at MCC and transfer, but why be unhappy for a year? Take a hard look at the curriculum and classes at MCC Steinhardt and then at CAS majors, and base your decision on where you think you will be happier. Forget about an admisions advantage. There probablly isn’t any.
